Go check out the classified section here as mentioned above:) I just looked and there are some good razors in the $50 range that would serve you far better than any gold dollar!

Buy quality, you may suffer from temporary buyers remorse, but at the end of the day you'll be glad that you did.

Wow - after being on a hiatus for a while, I have to admit seeing Gold Dollar's still being sold a little surprising. How ... disappointing.

Looking at the classifieds is the right decision. Always a nice straight at a good price there if you look.
It's funny how the people who need a good blade or anything else to get started will spend the least to get started. That doesn't mean to spend $100.00 on a razor. But for around $30.00 to $50.00 you can get a good razor that will take a great edge. By first learning on places like this one you will get an idea what is good & not so good. To get a decent strop & a well honed razor from advertisers on here makes more sense than getting a razor shaped object from China that Master Woo personally honed & stropped . LOL!
I so far have only bought vintage blades. I have over 50 straight's, a Rolls & a couple of DE's. I have yet to pay over $30.00 for any razor or strop. I have payed more than that for hones but a beginner shouldn't worry about that yet. Get a good vintage blade that has been honed & stropped from a member here at SRP & get a decent strop to maintain the edge. Watch videos about straight razors & maintaining them & you will be on the road to great shaves.

Takes a trusting soul to buy 'sight unseen.' I am not one of those. I was thinking of Snap-On wrenches. You can get Craftsman, S&K, Proto, which are cheaper, but not cheap, or some made in China thing that is cheap. But a Snap-On is a thing of beauty. Functional art. The others are just tools. Some razors are like a Snap-On wrench, there is just an enjoyment in picking the thing up and using it. Some people appreciate that sort of thing, while others couldn't care less.
Matt, just to ad another Good perspective, though I agree with the use of the classifieds here as a great place to get a quality razor at very fair prices, I Bought a gold dollar from a Gent in texas off an ebay ad, he listed his stones and progression up to Gokumayo20K finisher, had promised 2 free honings besides and at 14$ I took the chance and it turns out to be my smoothest straight razor shave so far. True story.
Not necessarily cheap. Just more for a budget of uncertainty. Not everyone is looking to collect and is looking for a beautiful restored vintage, just something that is useable and restored enough. I am considering buying a new razor but am not sure if I will continue with straights or if I'm going to go back to using my IBC razor full time. As I feel like I busted my razor I want a second to compare and will send my first whipped dog out to get rehoned and see where I stand with all of it. If i do decide to keep with the straights then I will most likely invest in some hones and try to learn and restore a max of 4 razors to have a 7 day set along with the new one I would buyQuote:
