Mostly neat. I wipe lather off areas that will not see the edge of the razor before I begin, but if there is a tiny bit of lather left before I begin my next pass I'm usually not too concerned about it.

Barring Grumpy Old guy Mood, or time constraints, I'm generally Reasonable, not too neat and not sloppy ever, besides a small mess cleans up quick.
Did you ever consider that somebody could be joking around and throw a rubber snake, a fire cracker, or some other shocking thing at you when the Razor is up on your Throat?, Could be nasty eh? Just one of the Old guy thoughts. :hmmm:
I fall into the neat category, never get anything near the pivot, hands and brush handle dry. Guess is one of the few areas where I am fairly meticulous...thanks for a great thread Obie!
I would say "mostly neat."
I never saw much point in working up a thick lather.
Thin lather on the face to get it wet and lubricated is all that I ever really worried about.
Such it was with my safety razor, even more so with multiple blade razors, even more so again with a straight razor.
Definitely messy. When I shave it's always messy. I like lot's of lather. I do keep my hands dry however. Clean up is the part where you get neat. You must keep your equipment sanitized, sharp, and dry. Shaving is always an event for me. Keeping my equipment in tip top shape is even more of an event!
Neat.
I shave like I cook, cleaning as I go. For me, that equates to not only an orderly endeavour, but a slightly quicker one too.
I'm becoming neater. At first a major messy Marvin. I stand on a folded bath towel to keep bathroom from flooding. My hot wet dripping towel pre-shave over a small narrow sink is the messiest part. For the rest of routine I'm getting neater. Keeping razor and razor hand dry now. Shaving has become an event for me when time allows. Find myself making time for the leisure shave. Trying to keeping my gear in top shape is even more of an event!
Getting lather on my nose made me sneeze, try very hard not to do that now.
And glasses, have to completely stop, and clean my glasses if anything gets on them.
Trying to be neater.
One suggestion is to remove your glasses while you lather and toss them back on so you can see where you're shaving.
