Guys, the pilot chute comment was mostly a joke anyway.
Also, anyone had luck in their SR conversion attempts?
That could be fun...:hmmm:
And in your other post, I vote astral projection. Definitely.:beer1:

Angles Matter, no way to get rid of your main chute with a military harness. If you do have a streamer it is time to deploy your reserve chest chute. Practice jumps were from 1200' so plenty of time. Combat jumps could be as low as 500' not much time.
Ha! :) :rofl2::rofl2:

I know you guys were put out low, in order to be sure to put the guys all on the drop zone, to limit aircraft exposure to AA fire, and to help prevent the men being shot in their parachutes.....but by 2000 feet I would be setting up my landing approach and at 500 feet I'm actually on approach, turning base leg I think.
Thanks for the clarification, I didn't think you guys would have time to cut away, just pull the reserve if things get hairy.
It takes a sport parachute about 1000 feet to fully open from a terminal velocity skydive. *If you pull your main at 4,500 feet it'll be 3,500 feet before it's open.
Some funny replies to this thread, I am really enjoying this site.

Hate to be the one this happens to.

78 training and 2 combat jumps, most from 2500 and under 3 halo,s, it was the last jump I made that the chute failed at 500 foot. I didn't survive,, its always your last one isn't it? just kidding about the not surviving guys.
Tony nice to hear from another 82cd brother, Airborne Ranger all the way my friend. our jumps were not meant to be for entertainment were they? Tc
tcrideshd,
Thank for you for protecting the country and I'm glad you got out of it alive. (Hopefully with no major injuries).
I must make an edit. The name of the magazine is not SKYDIVER but PARACHUTIST. I am pretty sure anyway, it's been 7 years since I've read a copy. *Most of it was ads anyway.
My wife did a tandem sky dive on her 50th birthday. As the plane was taking off, I noticed that one of the tires was alarmingly low. I was pretty concerned until I remembered that she would not be landing in that plane. It was strange being comforted by the fact that my wife was going to be jumping out of that plane.
bluesman7,
That is pretty funny and it goes to show that "details always matter." :p
Love that one Vic. Yes, odd, but a fact.
And Tom, ive reas about those chutes. Figured they sure would have to be big!
T.C., i didnt know you were an 82nd brother too. Airbourne my friend! But i have to say that i was transfered to the 101st after 2 years. They needed more guys like me i guess. :confused:
Getting off topic but, when I was in the 101st it was airmobile also. I ran generators for a Missle system. Most the time they would land the Huey and roll off the equipment, then set up, but a couple times we and the equipment would go out the door in flight.
Oh, the days of being a healthy young man. I'm afraid I'd break a leg or worse if I tried it now. Lots of memories. Good and bad, but still nice to remember those days. As the saying goes, "Young, dumb and full of ........ :) I remember the patch we wore was called The Gaggin Dragon. A dragon with a spear coming out its mouth. Think I still got one put away somewhere.
Sorry man. No Ranger here. Was with 82nd long enough to get all the good trainning and to jump a half dozzen times. Then they pushed me off on the 101st. By then the 101st didnt jump from planes. My time was 82 thru 85. Guess im not as old as you guys. Never seen any action. Spent all my time in Ft. Bragg. And never left till i got out.
Guess i just knocked myself back down a few levels of the TC cool list. Its an up and down trip for me. Ha.
I try not to think too much on the Army days. So now i will just go quite on it.
Young and dumb, too much drugs and alcohol.

This was when i got out.
:nono::cen Tc
Alcohol = normal behavior
Drugs = abnormal behavior
At least to me anyway.
Clearly these conversations are common. Many friends when hearing about my jump into straight shaving want total play by plays. But non seem to have the gumption to get in. Suddenly I feel like a cult recruiter who is all like "Here's a shave cream, would you like to hear about the joy and enlightened that comes from straight razors?"
I mentioned to a guy at work that I shave using a SR and all he seemed interested in after that was whether or not I'd shaved my wife's legs with it.
Kinda weird.
:shrug:
My first impression is that he has a sexual fetish.
Wait a minute, hold the phone! A forum member on here mentioned to me in a thread that I "should shave my girlfriend's legs with it."
I then jokingly asked my GF about it and she said "sure" but added "she'd be a little scared."
For me it was like getting past the mental block and fear of straight razors. Reading on these forums helped me push thru it and say what the hell just do it and was the best decision ever. Now other people have no fear and I’ve just recruited a friend down in Mexico to try and he’s truly excited. Nice to see that finally because I was starting to believe my wife when she said I was NUTZ!
Yeah and she’s a total no go for me shaving her legs with a straight or safety razor.
Suddenly this thread has become “men who are braver with their beloveds legs than I”
It's only considered "grooming" if she's under 18 and you are planning ahead for when she's 18. :)
And now we've cleared up where that line is...
;)
Maybe our "new recruitment" line should be..."Groom your girl"
OK guys you've had your fun and now knock it off.
Stick to the original subject matter and enough with the shave your legs unless you be talking of shaving your own legs.
Humans fear what they dont understand. Its a fact skydiving in my opinion is a verry safe sport. 800+ skydives with not so much as a sprained ankle. Water skiing thats dangerouse! There was a time every man shaved with a strait, people werent cutting throats and falling over dead by the dozens. I have converted both friends i have taken the time to introduce to wet shaveing, a little education went a long way for me.
Skydiving is in the category of a lot of other fun sports that some call "extreme" and that is that it's a safe sport but very unforgiving. :) Most anything that is fun is in that category.
I never saw shaving with a straight as scary though. I did get that you need to be careful. :)
I think I initially nicked myself more with a DE than I have with a straight.
I on the other hand never have cut myself with a DE and cannot understand how anyone can cut themself with a safety razor unless they were to slide the razor sideways.
