Thread: Taking A Walk Down Memory Lane

Well gentlemen it's been 6 years shaving almost daily with a straight, golly does time fly by. Was around this time in 2016 that I first got interested in shaving with a straight, and had even managed a few bloody shaves. Thanks to this website I was able to take a walk down memory lane and go through some of my old posts and projects. Really kind of makes you sit back and realize how much work you've put in to get to where you are today. I'm honestly laughing at some of my old post about bad shaves. Looking back I'm like yep rolled the edge for sure stropping that time, or had that really dry lather and still tried to shave irritation lol. I can only imagine what my shaves will be like ten years from now. This journey has been so much fun, and taken me so many places. Grateful for all you guys that are still kicking around. It's a wonderful thing knowing you are still going at it. Some just give up. I too have looked back at my posts. It sure makes you think.

I still think about the path that got me here.

All those years of no knowledge on proper procedures to a good, let alone a perfect shave. Not knowing about all the different hones, or there was anything better than canned goo.

All I wanted was a new straight, was checking the web and found SRD/ Imperial shave right in my back yard.

After purchase of a new razor from there, I had a short talk with the owner, Don Addelman. He pointed me towards SRP.

Looking thru the forum, I was attracted to all the restorations done to vintage razors, and how much more attractive they were to the more modern style straight razors. So I took on restoring new life into old steel, and now enjoy shaving with razors from the late 1700s, to the present, along with a couple customs.

But yeah...I remember my very fist straight shave. Shook like a dog crapping brokon glass.

Yep, me too. My first straight shave I was probably 14 or 15; just started to shave and decided to use my Dad's straight (which I still have over 40 years later) and I felt like it went well. This was a Saturday night. Next day we went to church and the youth director looked at me kind of funny and asked me, "Did you get attacked by a cat?" A little while later I looked in the mirror and I had all these little scratches on my face which I didn't even know I had.

After that I spent probably 10 years with a barber home and a leather belt maintaining the one razor I had and didn't know there was anything else until I discovered SRP looking for information on an antique store find. I have learned more in the last 5 years than in the 40 before that.

I have been shaving with a straight for over 40 years and am extremely grateful to have found SRP. The folks here have shared techniques, knowledge and advice that has saved me so much time, money and missteps restoring razors, that I can’t thank them enough.

I was truly devastated when the site disappeared for a while and was thrilled when it was reincarnated in its current form.

I hope we get to share the wet shaving experience for a long time.
