I normally do 2 passes with soap and 1 touching up pass with only just water (it's a kind of slimey water due to the soap residue still on my skin) to tidy up.
I'm just starting to discover this as well. 2 passes with soap then 1 with water only. Your right about the slimey water too. I know the guy at Razor Central talks about the second over using only water. I'm finding I can get the more challenging hairs easier with a water only follow up.
2 passes for me, WTG and XTG. I have done 3 before to experiment,
WTG WTG XTG, and it does give a nice shave, perhaps slightly longer
lasting. Since I shave daily, 2 passes is quite sufficient.

Two passes, WTG and XTG, would be sufficient to keep me presentable the whole day.
I have, however, been doing three passes, with an ATG
- because I prefer to shave at night, after a long hot shower, and taking my time. With two passes at night, I've got a 5 o'clock shadow by 3:00. ;)
- because I am trying to hone my technique
- because I just hate to waste soap. :)
Two passes (with and against) unless I'm in a hurry or nick myself on the first past, then just the one.
usually in a hurry in the morning, so just one pass, and touch up w/t water. on the weekend, or going out w/t the wife, I'll do two, and touch up w/t water.
None of the guys at work complain when I only do one pass. oh and I shave every day.
