Good shave from cheap razor??

Hi, This morning I shaved with this razor, an Enzo England Gold plated 7/8. I bought this razor many months ago when I was starting to get interested to straight shaving and was just a newbie. I was told that this is an inferior razor, that it would not shave.
I must admit that it turned me off form it so I started bying more known brands (Wade&Butcher, Boker, Dbl Duck, Worldmaster, William Rodgers, Dovo, Wapis...etc.). I have been shaving and sharpening my razors since then and I'm getting terrefic results.
Lately my attention was turned back to the Enzo razor and I decided to give it a try. After many trip to the honing stones and the strops (one coated with chromium oxide) I finely got it to pass the hht, tpt, tnt with flying colors. When I glide it over my arm all the hair that it encounters just pop right up.
SO I took it for a shave. After a good preperation, I got a very confortable shave, no pulling, no irritation, no jumping around even againts the grain. Just a super shave and seems to hold an edge quite well.

It's not one of the boys (name) in the arena but it can do a great shave when well prepared.

That's what matters - The Shave. If you're happy with it and it shaves you well, no one else can say anything but "Congrats"!

Thanks for letting us know how you got on. I'd also be interested in knowing if you find the razor keeps an edge ok or if it loses the edge quicker than your other razors.

+1 Trewornan - that's what I'd be afraid of as well - Some razors are just so inferior that they won't even take an edge (see Zepkt), but some will take and edge, but take a beating just from the force of the wiskers.

Keep us posted on shave 2 and 3 - very interesting experiement at the very least.

if I can pound out a copper wire and sharpen it enough to cut hair you can do the same with steel.

you can shave with almost any chunk of metal out there if sharpened. It all depends on how much upkeep you are willing to do.

I'm glad you are able to get an edge you are happy with and are getting to use what you bought.

There is a thread on Badger and Blade asking what everyone's best shaver is and it seems that most people have replied that their best shaver is a cheap razor, $30 and under. Curious, makes me want to try some clunkers off of ebay.

Yes there are a lot of lesser known and therefore cheaper brands that will be on par or better than the big name brands... there are phenomonal buys avaialible in US made razor...look for torrey, christensen, challenge, genco (geneva) to name but a few.
