got the nerve up today and got 90% shave. yes it was cheap "foam" and im sure i was not doing things all right but i did use one of my hand made razors and even had fun doing it. it was a 5/8 short blade (1.5 inch long )
had one trouble spot and i cleaned it up with a reg razor but all and all not back and i think i like the shorter blade and rounded toe and heel.
seems like this is going to be more a weekend shave deal as weekdays i dont need to spend more time not in the shop

This line of thinking is NOT going to lead to more time in the shop! I encourage it for sure though. I can't imagine the razors you will make if you are actually a straight shaver too. The work you do already is fantastic.

you seem to do things backwards though... most people here start with a cheap razor honed by somebody else, then they move on to hone their own razors, then they buy a harner razor...
at least you can't complain that the razor isn't good enough, or not honed well enough
