I just got back from a trip to the local spa (My wife has a massage and I lay back, listen to music and have a nap) and I purchased a bottle of scented massage oil. I was planning to try it for beard prep before tomorrows shave. Has anyone else tried this or would anyone advise me against it?
I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I don't think it can do you any harm, the only problem I see is if the oil doesn't absorb into your skin fast enough it will just mess up your lather. Still, do try it!
I tried a shave with olive oil once..worked great! But it did get a little messy but still great!
I tried it this morning. It didn't detract from the quallity of the lather but I think the benifits are minimal. But between the time I get out of the shower and put in my contacts so I can see where my face is I think my beard does dry out just a little. So the massage oild did help in this regard.
But I think this might be something I will keep for the weekend shave when I can take the time to really enjoy it.
The feeling I got was that most of the benefits of shave oils isn't when actually shaving, but more afterward, since the oil stick to your skin and makes it feel all slick and nice, not at all dry, as if you would have used some really expensive moisturizer. This was at least what I got when using TAoS PSO, which is ultra-thick, like really thick olive oil.Quote:

Pre & post shave with Baby oil. Read some of my SOTD. I have started to mix baby & olive oil together as a pre & post shave splash... Makes my face feel great, plus I smell like a swim-suite model in a Italian Deli.
I'll heat up the mixture in a cup that I put in the sink of hot water as I take my shower. Then when I get out I rub it all over my face, feels nice and warm and holds moisture just right. After my shave is done and just before I clean up I'll splash it on again. This time when it's cooled to room temp. Nice feeling.
*Note: I have always rubbed in baby oil after I shave my head. Not with a str8 razor tho.
Try Hawaiian Tropic Sun Tanning Oil (no SPF)...works great...
Absollutely not, unless you want to draw the rath of the many shaving demi gods. Really though, if it works for you, it works. Why worry about what others think.
Well, I've been using the massage oil for the past week and I haven't had any problems. The main benefit for me is it keeps my face moist while I put in my contacts. It isn't the holy grail of shaving, but I seem to enjoy it.
