Bought a Swaty and did 5 passes with lather. The blade was just fine before that, just wanted to see what it would do. The first shave I cut myself 3 times, but they were minor. The second time I only used it for the ATG pass and got a good sized gusher.
I need to smooth it out on the NOS Thuringian immediately!

5 passes is that your normal routine? Did you lap the swaty after you bought it? The small scratches under the bloody gob looks like your edges became damaged, almost serrated.
Yeah, used the DMT 325. It arrived very flat, didn't take long at all to remove the pencil lines.Quote:

At 60x the edge still looks perfect. Bought it from ZethLent, and it was honed on natural JP stones - no scratch marks at all.Quote:

You might want to consider shipping off your blade to one of the Honemeisters here for a good honing. The usual response when guys shave for their first time with a newly Honemeistered blade: "Oh. I used to think that any blade that was sharp enough to remove arm hair was sharp enough to shave with. Not so. Now I know that a blade that is sharp enough to remove arm hair without me feeling it ("velvet squeegee") is *probably* sharp enough for a comfy shave. You should feel no scraping, no pulling, nothing. Try this... run the spine of your razor (the thick part that isn't sharp) down your arm. Feel how smooth the spine feels? Running the sharpened edge down your arm should feel like you're just running the spine of your razor down your arm, and it should just wipe all the hair right off. This is how a Honemeister honed blade will come to you.
As mentioned previously, I purchased the str8 from ZethLent shave ready. I love it and was able to recently do 3 passes without needing the DE to cleanup.
That slice I made is about 1 inch above the point of my Bruce Campbell chin, where it makes a sharp bend. I do not feel that I was pushing too hard, but was not stretching the skin well enough. I felt that sucker slice neatly into my skin like a surgical scalpel.
And thanks, now I have a 2 inch swath of bare skin on my arm :)

Do you have a bar of alum and a styptic pencil? The alum bar will really help keep the razor burn, bumps, even zits at bay. It does sting a bit, though. The styptic pencil will help stop the bleeding from any cuts or weepers, and it also acts as a disinfectant. They are both really cheap, too.
Good call GW! That was my first thought as well, the dip above the chin had not been stretched flat. I dont think that I would blame this on the blade, but you may wish to inspect the edge just the same.Quote:

I apologize for my lack of sympathy and useless tips. I do agree with previous posters that a light touch and skin stretching are EXTREMELY importent. Never blame a blade for being to sharp. The sharper the blade, the lighter the touch.
Early on I had Josh Earl sharpen a blade for me and thought it was too much. After the second use I learned to use a very light touch and had one of the best shaves of my early career in wetshaving.
You can go to far and overhone, but a finely honed, sharp razor is what all users want. In the hands of the inexperienced it can be overwhelming.
It sounds like what you have is a very keen razor and a heavy hand. Relish in what you have and slow down. Enjoy the fact that you have a great razor and feel it cut every hair as you use it. There is no time limit when shaving with a str8, just enjoy the ride.
Also, I would like to retract my statement on using Clubman and move on. It seemed funny at the time, but offered no help in the meantime. Unless of course you're into that kind of stuff. :)

No sympathy needed here, was just looking to share a great picture of blood, and to say that sharp scares this n00b! (yes, overwhelming indeed). There have been plenty of good tips already, no need to apologize. And I have no idea what "Clubman" even is, so no offense taken.
I don't have that bleeding stick thing (you?) mentioned, and I should probably get that, but I don't mind letting my cuts bleed until they stop. I do have "MiN Solution2" and it seems to put a layer of something chemically over my cuts and burns.
I am certainly enjoying the ride, and I will never be offended by anything said here: for I am a nurse and have thick skin - and get to hurt people with sharp objects :)

Oh ya regarding your cut, dood it happens but has nothing to do with being too sharp,too rough an edge or not stropped properly, but more then anything sounds like poor technique.

Just sat down after honing a couple of my razors...while watching The Antiques Roadshow, actually. And I agree with the consensus - if you've ever attempted to shave with a blade that's lost its edge, you'll know what it's like to want a super sharp edge.
I can remember nicking myself once or twice in that very spot when I first started. That little dip between the ball of the chin and the lower lip often coaxes newer shavers to adjust the angle of the blade rather than contort their face. And instant later, you feel the edge pop through the skin and you get to watch that little red seam appear in the mirror. I usually stick out the lower jaw, pull the bottom lip over my teeth and keep it there with my upper teeth for a few seconds so I can do a few swift strokes and get everything nice and smooth.
Yup, that's my plan. Going to get a taste of lather in the mouth, but worth avoiding that slicing feeling.Quote:
