Where is the best place in the house to keep a straight razor?
Where is the best place in the house to keep a straight razor?
In a drawer, in the bathroom you are going to shave in...
On a non-skid mat that allows air to circulate...
I live in Nth Idaho where the humidity level is 20-50% so it is pretty much average...I dry them leave them open overnight and oil them before I close them.... I have never had a problem using this system...
I dry mine, and leave them on a night stand next to my bed, in a tooth brush stand. I don't like leaving them in the bathroom where there will be high humidity. Some people may have no trouble, but I live in a house with one wife and 2 daughters. Long shower wall dripping humidity I am suprised the crome does not rust.

IMHO: If you have small kids - as far away from them as possible and usually that is up high and out of sight.
For me, locked up in a drawer at the absolute top of my dresser. In time, they will also go to a locked box in a locked drawer.
I have two very young, active and curious children whom I do not want ever getting into trouble with these. Granted, I will teach them about how I use them and how to handle razors properly in time but at the end of the day, kids are still kids and accidents happen. Whatever I can do to mitigate the possibility of something like that, I will do.
Since they are put away, They are sprayed with camelia oil before going into the holder but I don't deal with as much humidity as others.
In my house, it's all about safety.

I have an area on top of a High dresser that I keep all my shaving supplies. I keep no razors in the bathroom (due to the humidity) and due to the children factor of curiosity (not my kids but the friends).
When on top of the dresser they are in a large watch box so they are out of sight.
:)
Keep it in your shoe like Bad, Bad Leroy Brown.
Badder than Ol King Kong, meaner than a junkyard dog...
Other than that, dry it fastidiously, strop it a few times, and if you won't be using it the next day, oil it up.
Mine are hanging on a rack in a 1/2 bath where I shave. So there isn't any shower/bath to create humidity. When the nieces and nephews visit I hide them in a Tupperware tub, high on a shelf. Eventually I'd like to make a lock box to store them safely, when the little ones come by for a visit.
I keep mine on a high, wide shelf in my bedroom.
They look better on display, and I don't have to worry about any possible humidity problems from the bathroom.
Since I have no kids, for now, on a small pillow, on my dresser opened until it dries, then back in the box placed on top of the pillow.
Gentlemen,
I store some of my straight razors on the sink counter in a converted smoking pipe rack and the rest in a coffee cup I bought from Harrods in London — the cup has sentimental value. In my modest condominium, the shower and the sink are in two separate rooms. In essence, therefore, my razors face relatively little humidity.
Yet, change is coming. I have a six-month old grandson, and grandsons grow up and become curious about things, especially if they look like a folding knife with a shiny blade. So I will have to look for another place to store my razors.
Regards,
Obie
I don't oil my razors, I really don't see the point and need for this if you have dried the steel and keep it out of humid warm places, if not then oil to preserve it. I store mine in an antique red glass jar on my dresser in my bedroom, it actually stores like 10+ razors, the rest all sit in their respect coffins.
No problems so far.
cheers

Properly dried and on top of my dresser (it is a gentleman's dresser, so it is high). As stated by others, my wife knows nothing about conserving hot water, so the bathroom is not appropriate.
Funny, that is my situation exactly, except I currently have five people living at home and the bathroom obviously steamy alot. With that and living in high humidity Florida, I keep mine on my dresser as well. Eventually I want to make a box with those "anti-humidity" packets in it for storage.
I used to keep mine under my pillow at night. All the movement would sharpen them while I slept but I got tired of having to replace pillows all the time.
My youngest son (nearly 4) can get into the high shelves - so I now keep my razors locked in my travel box.
It has a cheap combination lock that only takes me a moment to open - hopefully by the time he can crack the code he'll be safer around sharp objects.
... of course he can still get to the sharp things in the kitchen!
If you like looking at pics - my travel box is down the bottom of this link:

All the best,
Michael.
I keep mine in its Dovo Eyeglass case in the bedroom.
I keep mine in a padded travel box I made up that also carries my shaving cream and brush and strop
Mine are dried meticulously, then bound in chain and wrapped in a towel like a burrito. Then I tape the towel closed and secure it in bubble wrap, probably around 30 or so layers. After this, I put it in a thick, wooden box with a padlock keeping it closed. The wooden box is then glued to the top of a high dresser and buried in the backyard upside-down, 7 feet deep. Upon covering the hole, I place no less than 9 wolves around the hole to ensure no intruders. Those 9 wolves have laser-beams attached to their heads and are protected by 4 guard-dogs each. My backyard is also in a castle, surrounded by a moat, with a single draw-bridge guarded by a troll named Hank. This troll must ask you 3 questions in order for you to pass. Generally, the third question is about the location of the Ark of the Covenant or the existence of extra-terrestrial life on Neptune's second-largest moon.
Thank God I only shave every other day...
Go to your local tobacco store and ask the guy for an old cigar box. Then, the next time you get some electronics or leather, grab the silica gel packets that are used to keep the items dry and throw them in the box.
There you go -- an extra dry razor box. I'll take a picture of mine when I get home.
I keep mine in a cigar humidor which I modified for the opposite effect. Keeps 'em dry, and safe.
Very funny you had me laughing out loud, DerekC.
I dry with a non bleached paper napkin, set open, on a clear glass tray on another napkin folded to fit the tray. After showering and dressing, I oil up with Lucas Gun Oil on a Q-tip and store in a plastic tray lined with Rubber non-skid matt with 4, 2in x2in dehumidifier packets and 7 others razors, in a drawer in the bathroom vanity. I am in Southern California and it's fairly dry here.
My children were taught early what not to touch and we never had a problem. My grandson has been introduced to my razors as well as other thing he should not touch and respects them for what they are.

Mine are strung over the whole house, the bathroom, the bedroom, the office as well as the shop.
You might try asking GibII if he has any of those nice 7-day razor boxes he was making left. I have no idea if he's made anymore but he makes a really nice box. Even though I only have one razor I still bought one.
I leave mine open beside the kids shoes
I live in an RV by the ocean so I have to dry them and keep them in my sock drawer with some silica. Even then I've had some issues.
I keep mine in a wooden cigar box in the bathroom, where my son stays in the shower so long mold or rust could grow on you by just walking in. Luckily the cigar box protects them fully.
I keep mine in a converted bracelet box from wal.... they sit right next to my easychair.
