There used to be 2 alternatives for me for holiday shaving. Either take your razor and strop in a case (which could get banged around or lost) or DE shave. There is a another option - the Feather no sharpen straight. I am not advocating daily use of this razor - but it is great for holiday shaving.
I bought a Feather artist club from Classic Shaving for 99.95. The blades are cheap - works out at 5 to 10 cents a shave. Having DE shaved with Feather blades, and having great respect for them, I got the blades with the guard for my first try. There are also 2 other non-guard blades equivalent to a 5/8 or a 6/8 normal straight blades.
Had my first try today. Did a 3 pass shave. BBS, no nicks and very easy to handle. Be careful - the razor is relatively heavy so you have to avoid pressure. I think the next time I buy blades I shall try the non-guard blades.
The only downside is the relatively high price of the razor. The blades are cheap. Also the blade insertion instructions are not very good. You have to work out some things by yourself!
