    Default Making Progress

Third day with a traditional str8 (vs. my Fromm hair shaper). Closer on the jaw, and cheeks, although I scraped a bit on the chin. Neck is still now going real well, but that was even a problem with the FROMM. I'm playing with different paths in some parts to see which works best on my beard.

Any advice on the neck would be appreciated.

    Jlee,

I to have only been shaving since Saturday. While
I have no problem with my neck the chin seems to
be a problem. All we can both do is to keep working
at it and one day wel will discover that magical angle
    that solves the problem.

Remember the longest journey begins with a single footstep.

best of luck and happy shaving.

Prep, prep, prep. The better your prep the better your shave. If you've done all the prep you can and still don't get the shave you want then pay very close attention to the direction of hair growth. Some of us (myself included) have REALLY wierd directions of hair growth on the neck and chin. Mine grows parallel to my jawline from left ear to halfway up my right jawline then reverses growing from right ear towards chin. This makes for some very awkward angles whn trying to shave against the grain. I don't sweat it too much. Most of us have persistant problem areas. I can still feel a very small amount of stubble under my jaw right after shaving. It passed inspection at my Guard unit last month (CO actually commented on how good it was) so I'm not going to worry too much about it.

Pretty much. Stropped the razor up real good, and then again before doing the chin.

I've also had problem with my neck - for a long time, I just couldn't get it as smooth as the rest of my face.

I've found that not only do I have to pull the skin really tight, but also that a slightly heavier stroke is sometimes needed on the neck. The skin there being a bit more used to irritation, it doesn't give razor burn or anything like that, but it does take off the hair much more efficiently.

Now if I could only get right under my lip and my moustache....

That is a tough one you can't easily go against the grain. Try across the grain.

I DO go against the grain on my upper lip by resting the spine upside down on my fingertips and carefully guiding it up with the "off" hand while the dominant hand actually holds the blade down on the fingers so it can't accidentally run away into some nasal injury.

For my neck, I turn the scales down projecting past the edge and come at my adam's apple from as sidelong a direction as possible. It takes quite some work to get a perfectly smooth shave there.

    X,

You are one brave mofu. I wouldn't do that for all the tea in China. Wow I could just see me breathing through this hole in my face after I cut my nose off. lol

Sounds like things are going pretty well. As far as the neck is concerned, I find for myself that stretching is an important part of it and the angle of the blade. What I mean is that I lead with the heel of the blade a little more on my neck and it seems to help a bit. You have to play around a bit to find what works best for you.
