any single pass guys out there?

so i'm unsure how long i've been using the feather ac.. but just over the last few days it occurred to me that i really don't need multiple passes.. i originally started with my ac by doing 3 passes.. then abandoned the atg on the neck when i started getting ingrown hairs.. then stopped the atg all together since i didn't notice a difference anyway.. and now i'm noticing that a second pass xtg isn't really needed either.. i do however have some minor spots here and there that need a second go around.. but not my entire face.. so i think my new method is just a single wtg and then a light touchup under my jawline and around the edges of my mouth...

true.. a baby's ass is still smoother than my face.. but you could put my face up against any other 29 year old's face and i think i'd come out on top..

anyone else gone all the way back to one pass?

Since starting the cold water shave routine ..... and with over a couple of years doing it under my belt ........ the routine you describe is very similar to mine most nights. Every now and again I find I need a second pass but mostly it is one and a touch up under the jaw line and on either side of the wind pipe.

Before I tried shaving with a straight I would only shave WTG except the soul patch and mustache with my triple blade. Anything more would get me razor burn and ingrown hairs. When I started using a straight I wanted a BBS shave soo bad I tore up my face and got frustrated going XTG and ATG. I was about to quit when I backed off and have been doing a 1 pass WTG (except for that patch and mustache-nothing shaves these spots but ATG!)and doing much better. I don't get BBS but then I never had before so its not so bad. I hoped to graduate to 2 or 3 passes but its not likely to be anytime soon...if ever.:shrug:

I must say that since I began shaving in 2 passes, my face looks like it met Jack the Ripper... So I will go back to 1 pass a while because that's how my skin looks better, until my technique gets better.

hey thanks guys.. knowing that jimmy does a one pass is enough to make me feel fine about doing it too... all this bbs talk is nice and all.. but really.. at what costs? my face feels bbs when rubbing wtg.. not very many girls examine further than that.

I do one pass and a touch up and my face is plenty smooth.

I usually do 2 passes (WTG and ATG) to make my face smooth. I do 1 pass WTG if I am in a hurry. If I don't do ATG, I need to shave 2 days after that. With ATG it is 3 days.

Funny though, when I first started I did two passes and a touch up and eventually settled into a one pass/touch up routine until I found this sight.which is when I went back to a two pass and sometimes a three pass/touch up routine.
I am not certain when I went back to the one pass/touch up routine but I think I'll stick with it this time.

thinking about it.. i'm planning on going back to a mach3 for a week or two to really notice the difference i am getting with my artist club.. to be honest.. the only reason i switched to the artist club was because i liked the idea of it.. now i'd like to compare my results.. i always had a super smooth shave with the mach3.. i had been using a brush and soap for years and was always told how smooth my face was.. it'll be interesting to see how much of a difference i notice.

For the last few weeks, I've been doing a kind of ATG/XTG single pass.

Basically it involves a scything/slicing motion and buffing. If going left to right, the blade is at this kind of angle \ going this way ->

Working fine for regular 24 growth as well as 2 day growths. Has taken some technique refinement and still tweeking different places (chin), but pretty happy.

i have been doing it like ftg for the last year but i have changed my prep to weting with warm water then face lather with some homade soap wash it off then make a batch of shave soap and one pass with tuch up on jaw line and good to go.

I did I did :y but only when in a hurry :) well the result is smooth enough when rubbing the face wtg which what ppl most likely do, but then I personally don't like something rough in my chin and jaws, either to have it or not at all :p

glad you have super smooth shave with mach3 :( the reason I start using str8 is because I can't have a super smooth shave with mach3, I mean really smooth even if it's just last for 10 hour or so, not telling that even mach3 is marketed as a super safety razor, it still butchered my face (because I put pressure, but then no pressure no BBS)...but now I have BBS and really enjoy shaving with str8 :y not always 1 pass, I tried to keep it down to 2 passes only but only manage to get it down after 3 passes :)

If I'm in a hurry, I sometimes do only a WTG pass.

Alternatively, if I had a BBS shave the day before (i.e. not much growth) AND I've got a very sharp edge to work with, sometimes I'll do a one-pass ATG shave.

One pass only when rushed, otherwise it's two: N>S and then S>N but sideways under the nose on pass 2. One of these days I may throw caution to the winds and do the Fool's Pass on my upper lip. ...Noses will grow back, won't they? Perhaps I shouldn't worry now that face transplants are passe. Fools' passe, maybe?

Oh, and the cold shave for me is standing on the bathroom floor without slippers. --You should try it, Jimmy.

I also do one pass on occasion, but usually do WTG and then XTG to last me two days.

The best part about a one pass shave is that I can shave the next day without irritation. :)

Typically one pass, with a partial second pass on rough spots.

But when I'm in leisure mode, I love my 3-pass shaves.

One pass guy here...probably always will be.

My fair, super-sensitive Irish skin is in the 100th percentile of skin sensitivity, so I have to be satisfied with just one WITH the grain pass.

Anything more is a disaster...and yes, I've tried alum block and every other solution known to man. It's just the way my skin is.

i have only ever done one pass for about a year now, before i started with a straight, i cant see the point in getting my face nice and smooth just for the few hours it lasts.
But then again im lazy :)

I've been using a straight for about 1 year now, and I too feel that WTG is enough for me. I usually do a very quick second WTG pass, though I'm starting to feel this is unnecessary at this point, since I'm no longer missing any spots. I feel like it's enough for me, and still closer than what I was used to before I started using a straight. Plus, I can shave in about the same amount of time it took me when using a safety razor.

Normally, I take one pass against the grain and then touch up anything that's not baby butt smooth after that. Good razor, good edge maintenance and good shave prep and one pass ATG. Works for me. And really nothing all that special with the shave prep. Hot shower, steamy hot water on the face, hot brush and a little good cream. 30 seconds or so of lathering and I'm ready to go. Usually takes me about 5 minutes for a shave. I take more time on weekends, though, slowing down and enjoying it a bit more. :)

ok guys.. so i went ahead and shaved with a mach3 cartridge today.. and yeah.. although i was a smooth shave and i had no stubble.. i still felt as if a single pass with my artist club using professional light blades was a ton closer.. in fact.. i noticed a huge difference.. not in appearance.. but in feel.

I do 2 passes. 1st is WTG on my entire face. Then I do ATG on my neck and Xtg on my cheeks and Chin. After, I do a small clean-up on the chin because my chin is tough.
If I do more than that, the aluminum BURNS!!!! I know my technique and blade angle were ok by the lack of post shave burn!!

I am still new (bout 5 months) and am finally getting a close shave. I know this since I do the boobie test and PASS!!

Me too.
If I need to speed up things, I face lather and then I shave with one WTG pass. That's all I need to get very presentable and it cuts shaving time by half.

I to have found when in a hurry a single pass is fine, just means I might have to shave a day or so earlier, when I wish to have a very smooth face two passes with the first agin the grain mostly on the neck,and under the chin, across the grain on the cheeks and over the chin. The War Office is ver happy with the single pass as she reckons 2 girls in the place is bad enough with out a third ! taking up the bathroom, She even put a new hook up in the outside loo for my strop, just in case,:beer2: Cheeky Cow !!

Single pass is all I have ever done, and all you need if you do it right.

I am thinking of switching to WTG 1 pass only for comfort and speed, the BBS is looking less and less worth it to me.

Sometimes I'll do just one WTG pass (usually if I've just got too itchy a face before bed) and a touch up or two to catch the strays. This doesn't get me anywhere near BBS, but I'm doing it for the time aspect not the result.

If I had a to shave last minute for work or something, this could work in a pinch.

I have been doing shaving demonstrations lately for my friends and coworkers. Sometimes I end up doing 4 days in a row. If I do more than a single pass, not only do I not NEED a shave the next day, If I DO it, I get a bit of burn. But a single pass shave leaves me smooth enough for a normal day, and allows me to shave again if needed the next day.

Nothing wrong with a single pass, unless your date that evening is expecting silky smooth cheekyness :hmmm:

Since starting with the cold water routine, I've been doing a one pass every other day. A few touch ups as well, under the chin and sides of mouth seem to be my betes noires on that score.

I usually settle for 2 passes--WTG and XTG--to get a smooth shave to my liking.

On rare occasions I will shave ATG on my neck to get a really close shave in that region of my beard.

A finely tuned razor - 1 pass, DFS. But I love the BBS shave and that takes 2 passes and sometimes some touch up work. If I invest time into the prep, then I am going for a BBS shave.

Yep! One pass for me.
After fighting with ingrown hairs I just do one WTG pass.
BBS with bumps just don't look good to me.
I found that to get the best one pass shave I had to pay more attention to my technique.
Also had to take the razors edge to a more refined level.
Thanks to some of Papa Bulls research and studies. I have been able to improve the razors edge through a better understanding of edge refinement.

Depends on whether I'm in a hurry. If I pay close attention to what I'm doing, I can get a better than satisfactory shave with one pass. If I have time, I do a second, and sometimes a third pass, just because I like to shave. As I said in another context, for me it's a meditative experience, and it starts my day off right. By the way, I've been using a straight razor for a loooooooooong time, and I still enjoy it as much as I did when I was first learning to shave--and I'm still learning.

I'm a 2 pass man, although in hastiness I did a 1 pass this morning, and there was barely a noticeable difference, but i find the time taken to do 2 relaxing lol, ill do the ATG if i need the BBS but mostly I don't.

I typically only do one pass. I have found that my one pass WTG shaves have gotten better/closer as I've got more shaves under my belt. I do definitely get a closer shave if I do a second XTG or ATG pass, but you could only tell the difference by feeling my face - it looks the same. I also tend to get some irritation if I shave XTG and moreso if I shave ATG, so I prefer not to do it.

In my years dealing with everything until straight razors as of a few months ago..for me...if it isn't a straight razor..ingrown hairs are very likely to show up..an AC hand/blade isn't bad but the 2 to compare and far and beyond one another..if you google the cons n pro's..plenty to look at..just a thought though!

I wish I could do anything with a blade 1x and be happy..coarse beard doesn't make it any easier than 3-4 passes to get REAL close for me anyways

I'm glad that works for you, but even on my best days with any razor a single pass won't pass my Gold Standard of the old "playing card at 90 degrees and scraped ATG" test. Falling short of that is fine for most purposes and no one is usually the wiser, but I'd rather shoot for something nearer to perfect.

I do one WTG pass then ATG under my jaw and a couple touch ups. I call it a pass and a half. Works just fine for me. I'll probably do more passes occasionally once I get faster with a straight, but I don't have a problem with the level of smoothness after one pass.
