That is an absolutely awesome link Thank you so much for posting it. I just looked at the first three pages of the book you are referring to before posting this so I need to check it out more, But the site itself is new to me also and I will be visiting it frequently. I have a Mac Not a P.C. and some of the sites similar to this that I have seen weren't compatible.
Thanks for the link,
I loved reading this old book. I learned a lot about stropping...

I like how the book begins:
Attachment 42780
So much for the cheap 'practice razors' and 'practice strops' that are commonly mentioned among desired gear from guys endeavoring to begin to learn to shave with a straight razor
It was a great read. Although straight shaving is coming back, it appears it has moved forward and progressed well,..honing stones, brushes, straight razors, soaps and cream...etc.

Hello, Dancraig:
What a delightful book. I have read only a few pages of it and already am impressed. Thank you, sir, for being thoughtful and generous by providing this most informative and entertaining book.
Regards,
Obie
That was a good read, thanks for sharing :)
Thanks for that!
Some great straight forward and practical advice in there.
There's a lot to be gained from going back to basics after learning a few bad habits.
This book looked familiar to me, and upon further inspection it's actually the same book that kicked off JimmyHAD's popular cold water shaving thread: http://straightrazorpalace.com/shavi...orst-ever.html, which in itself was from a previous thread from LuckyCynic, http://straightrazorpalace.com/begin...made-easy.html
Sorry to be a downer, but I know many of us read the book back in the "cold water shaving craze"
I love this book.... thank you for posting the link.
They can come to chat, of course :)
I found this on the shave my face website though I would add it to this discussion. I didnt add the document as it is most likely already on the site here.

That's an amazing book... Thanks for the great link!
Interesting read for sure!
This has me wondering about my strop. The surface is very smooth and does not "grab" in the least. I wonder if this is causing some problems for me?
hmm..I could swear I have read this before...I liked page 15/6 where the width of blade is important and a 4/8 is recommended for beginners and a 7/8 would have too much "spring on your face"...I don't see any mention about a wedge size?...I guess those were used in cutting up animals for dinner...lol!

I love how none of these books advocate the use of Lilac Vegetal at all.
Barbers knew something back then...
My favorite quote from the book: "One thing may be said of safety razors in general-that if a man uses one he is less likely to cut himself, but this is all that can reasonably be said in their favor."
Not that I'm anti-safety razor or anything, I guess it just struck me as kinda funny. I pictured a bunch of guys with gray derby hats and outta control handlebar moustaches sitting around saying things like, "These damn young whipper snappers and their new fangled safety razors. This fad will never last, it'll be over in a month or two." :)
I enjoyed reading through this book and got some good tips out of it. I got a good laugh out of the instructions to hang the mirror "...between to windows if possible..." (pg 59). This is because it implies that there is no artifical lighting in the house to see what you are doing, i.e. no light bulbs! Got to love shaving instructions from the time before it could be expected that everyone had lighting in their homes.
I saw this book in another post somewhere else, and read it. Wow! It was great. Thanks for posting that link as it saves me the effort and helps others. I wonder about some of the advice in there, but I am going to try it and see how it works out. Interestingly, there is nothing in there about shaving with your non dominant hand...
