    Default 10 well-deserved thank-yous to JimmyHAD

    For this:
An old barber told me to hold the razor securely but lightly enough so that is if it pulls the razor will flex in your fingers and be less likely to nick. He also told me to never force it if it does pull. Following that advice I have rarely gotten a nick.

I have been trying to straight razor shave since Easter weekend and have been cutting myself mercilessly. When I come to this forum I read posts by this gentleman and for some reason when I read it again about 10 days ago this advice got through. I'm getting wonderful shaves now and my face feels so good after finishing up.

So Jimmy, respond to this post 10 times and I will thank you for each one.

Note: if you will change that smelly avitar of yours you get 11!

The final frontier is honing and maintaining the blade, so feel free to share what your barber friend said about that subject. I have a Norton 4K/8K, Chinese 12K, a lapping instrument (D8C) and a Swaty.

If you want him to keep the stinky avitar you're going to have to see my bid and raise him 12 thank yous.

In direct answer to your question, I don't know what took me so long, but I guess 40 years of bad shaving experiences is a tough habit to break. I was very patient because I wanted it very bad. I'm just now developing an instinct with regards to angle and pressure and hope to parlay that into better stropping because I still don't have an instinct for that unless the metal sound is it. I have read Jimmy's barber's advice many times and finally it just clicked. It is the best advice I've ever read.

Must agree with the OP. JimmyHAD's barber friend's quote helped my technique greatly when I started. I've already thanked him, but that little addition helps me every day!

The thanks should go to Frank Natale, (sp?) who was still barbering in 1980s at "The Barber Shop" on Midland Ave in Kearny, NJ, at 70 years old. Fifty years in the business. I hope he is still green side up, healthy, and cutting hair. His advice has helped me and I'm very glad that my passing it along continues to help others. The avatar stays.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I can dig the avitar. No BS is a good policy. BTW IMO, I don't really like it when other people change theirs. It throws my Name with a Picture off.

OK Jimmy, you have 9 thanks left to go. Post 'em and I'll thank 'em.

The last 3 shaves have been exponentially better. I don't know why it took so long for the advice to kick in, but it was reading it for the umpteenth time that got me over the hump. Even more, I don't know how I waited so long for the results to kick in.

I guess this is a fitting post for my 100th, a milestone reached.

The final frontier is honing...maybe by Post 200...

Thumbs up This was thee best advice ,thank you...

I too folloewd that advice and it worked famously.I had putzed around with my first Dovo best quality very sporadically for about seven years but got serious about five months ago and this little tidbit of advice was the rosetta stone of shaving for me.Been getting close to bbs every time now and the only time I ever got nicks was when I was being a careless jerk to my own self,so I got what I deserved then . Thanks infinity man !!....Can I do that or is that cheating ?

I am trying to follow the advise in JimmyHAD Sig line but it is something that I have to get use to i guess.

As for the Avatar, it is a must keep. Best Avatar to live life by IMO.
