3rd shave and BEST yet-Found a Trick................

[Misunderstood]

2 glasses of Cabernet Sauvignon and a close shave with only 2 cuts. My biggest problem seems to be I need to take off my glasses to shave comfortably and then seeing is an obvious problem, especially judging distance til blade meets skin when looking in mirror. That seems to be when I get a cut, the intial contact before motion begins, but I'm getting it down. Last night 2 glasses of wine (no I didn't need them to get my nerve up, just a coincidence) and no glasses gave me a great shave and step closer to being comfortable with the whole thing. Man I'm hooked on str8t's. Thanks all for such a great forum with an awesome knowledge base that is at your fingertips.

On a side note I want to commend all the members here as they are all true gentlemen in how they handle/respond to posts. Being on a Motorcycle forum for my bike lets you see the difference. This place ROCKS !! Thanks again, Dave

As you gain more experience shaving with a straight your need to see everything you are doing will have less importance to you. I wear glasses and at first I had to see everything I was doing and trying to find awkward angles to turn my head and hold the razor so I can see. Now I shave w/o my glasses and have no issues with it. It takes some getting used to it bit feel is an important part of the shave experience.

Work on that contact moment though. You shouldn't be doing that. I'm not sure why that would happen. Just make sure that your shaving stroke begins before skin contact. You should have a sense of the distance between your face and your index finger as it approaches your skin. I use the tip of my index finger on the outside of the blade shank since my mind has lots of experience moving my index finger in proximity to my face.

Wow you hit something here. I can recall a couple of my worst cuts came at the instant when I went from putting the razor on my face to the shaving stroke. I had unconsciously started being more careful there, but your saying it made me see it.

I'm not much further along, and still jumping through my navel to try to get technique down. I've nicked on landing also. To control that, I've touched down w/ the blade flat or spine first, also done by moving blade backwards for touchdown, but I like AFDavis11's idea best.
The technique won't come overnight, but you're gonna LOVE the shaves. Have fun & make use of the wonderful help here. +1 on the quality of help and attitudes here. The bike forums vary from the juvenile to the very helpful.

You will not find a better bunch of people than the people on this forum! I've been using a DE for about 5 months and I'm now ready to take or should I say retake the plunge in the straight razor world. You will only get better and faster with time. Yeah, I'm working on it. I think part of it too is that my 1st razor is a square point which adds to the possibilities of cuts. Have 2 others at Bob Keyes right now that will be better for me when they come back.
