i use a straight to keep my sideburns gone, i hate sideburns, and now i cut a whopping 10 or 12 stray hairs on my chin and some fuzz on my upper lip, i just enjoy the thought of using a old razor no matter how little hair i have to use it one. btw im 5'6 and in 10th grade, i just like keeping my face clear of the little hair i do have, (thats the only part of me i can keep clean for more than an hr,farm work keeps you dirty lol.
Okay, geezer report. I started shaving with a straight in my sixty-third year, though I dabbled a few times a couple of years before. Learned to shave with a Gillette DE when I was twelve or thirteen and returned to DEs about seven years ago. I wouldnt' go back to the cartridge world for nothin'!

I think it's great that guys in their sixties and beyond are trying something new. I hope to still be learning and growing and trying new (to me) things in my sixties and beyond. NOT that a person can't learn and grow in their sixties, but I know so many who choose not to.

I'm 49 about to go on 50 and just took up straight razor shaving about 2 months ago after recieving a couple of inherited straight razors my uncle used to have. Now I have about 10 razors, 3 strops ( still learning not to nick them which I do more than my face...LOL), and a set of honeing blocks. I love using my straights and my face loves it too! Glad I found this wonderful forum!
Two years ago at age 23.
Started shaving regularly with a straight at age 57 and loving every minute of it. It's never too late to start.
24, going on over 12yrs now. I must admit I use a mix of straights and DE's depending on time/mood/etc.
Well I guess DLB has me beat, I started at 56. I wish I'd started at 16.
Started 2 weeks ago, at 26...planning to get a new straight tommorrow, as well as a coticule hone, and some soaps. Yeah, RAD is setting in... As someone else at BnB said: "isn't it great saving all that money going away from expensive Mach 3s?"
Ah well, this is more of a hobby and a pleasure than is dragging a multibladed monstrosity across my face...

As someone else here on SRP said, it's cheaper than hookers and blow...Those would never be an issue for me...but it is cheaper than hot rods and the requisite tools and parts. So I at least have that going for me.
Well, you know, theoretically, you could find old crappy straights, restore them and sell them. A good restored razor goes for 40 bucks and up...so, you know, you could make some money. And then of course turn around and buy a really sweet custom that would cost at least 5 times as much. ;)Quote:

Well I started just over a year ago aged 40, but I'm hopeful that my son who's 11 in a couple of weeks will be interested enough to have a go when he needs to start shaving. After all its bound to be more bad-ass and impressive to the ladies than whatever the latest multi-blade Gillette is at that time.
However, the chances are it will be Lynx (Axe) rather than Tabac he drenches himself in after, its kind of a right of passage.
I started when I was 20, but gave it up soon thereafter. Now I'm 22, and in it for the long run this time. I'll be starting again later this week!
54. Believe it or not, I never used a DE until 54. DEs were disappearing when I started to shave and my dad was a confirmed electric razor shaver. I tried several times to follow in his footsteps but couldn't accept the results. So I tried all the new things, cartridges and disposables, one injector I can remember, which left me with a chapped face and close comfortable shaves only after I skipped a day.
The DEs are a snap, and straights, well, I've been struggling with them for about a year. I did learn how to hone my own razor, so I'll always have a tool ready for the next lesson. :)

My father shaved me with a straight when I was 15 and I started shaving myself with one at 16.

34. i spent way too many years with disposable cartridges, except when I was in the Army and used an electric.

I started several years ago at the age of 60.
At 17 in 1973, its been a long time,but I'm glad that its still alive and I believe growing-$16 for a cartridge that lasts a week,just nuts,and my kids have bought these three and four blade things for me on fathers day,they work OK for 1 or two shaves and then you need another cartridge.
Its a good racket if your selling them.And Gillette is cute they sell DE blades,but not the razors,like I said what a racket.
At least Ive taught my sons,21 and 17 to use both DE,and straights,and they prefer them to the cartridges,and both have there own straights-just got to teach them that daddy isnt always going to sharpen them for them.
PS-Ive gotta known -what did you guys think us older guys used before these cartrages came along,and what about you electric types?
what did you think we used before electric razors (which dont work for me at all)?

Ok, you do realize that by posting your responses in here I have been able to piece together pretty much how old everyone is!!!!!
Not to insult anyone, but lots of us are OLD!!!! I didn't start str8 shaving until 53, but I made the first attempt at 22. That attempt didn't last tho. This try it has. I've also begun to enjoy the restoration path as well.
So, for a guy who will be 54 next month, not bad I say!!!

Earlier on this year, at age 26, my W.H. Morley & Sons met my face for the first time; I gave the bathroom floor a new coating in red. It was awesome.

I started around the age of 17 / 18, ever since I started growing a beard I hated the feel of a non BBS face; I was looking into buying e DE razor when my dad told me "that's not a real razor, my granddad used a real razor". So I went to my grandparents place and ended up with 2 straight razors, a strop and a hone. Good times, been shaving pretty much daily with a straight for 5 years now. Great times, I could never use anything other than a straight and the occasional DE.
This will make you feel older ,but better in the sence that we (str8 shavers) are alive and well ,AND young-my oldest son has been using a straight since he was 17,and is now 21,the other is seventeen and has been using one for about six months,so were still going strong.
