Well, like I said, I'm not singling anyone out, nor would I bother to search through old threads trying to dig up evidence. My point was simply that in the online world many claims are made, and we usually have to take them for their word because we have no way to prove or disaprove any personal statement. So if a newb posted that his first shave was absolutely perfect - no blood, true BBS all over, done in 10 min - it may be suspect but we can't assume it's false either. And I understand Mark's situation too because I was there at one point myself. While the beginners forum is undoubtedly a great place to learn and share experiences unfortunately there is a tendency to gauge one's progress compared to everybody elses. I still believe at the end of the day that new guys are better served by concentrating on their own progress rather than focuing on others. :)

Well, I think that's true. I'm much more comfortable with my razors now and no longer am afraid to use my squarepoint (even if I still cut myself every now and again).

However, I know I'm not at the place you are and don't expect to be for quite some time. I hear all the time how people newer than I am are getting BBS shaves left and right. It's debatable whether that's the end-all and be-all of shaving, anyway, but this far into the game (and it's admittedly not far) I know I have a long way to go before it all comes together, especially consistently.

Your post and this thread give me renewed hope that this will all come together one day for me, too. Thank you.

Today I used a square point for the first time in quite a while and am happy to report that I had no problems. I had been avoiding this razor because that point did give me problems in the past.

The picture doesn't make the point look as sharp as it really is, but believe me where x and y meet it could prick your finger!

Sorry Ryan, just a feeble attempt at sarcasm on my part, i.e. dinosaur training comment being obviously BS. Yes while there are clearly some people who are a natural I think some people don't know what they are aiming for and call a BBS or proficiency in honing or whatever only to subsequently get better results in the future and realize that what they previously called wasn't strictly true! Oh and there is the occasional fantasist too who are basically BS merchants. Not many but in a forum this size its inevitable to have a few.

The fact is we should all concentrate on what we are doing without being competitive about it.

Ryan, I understand your point and agree. However, I think CaliforniaCajun, and others like him, does SRP and others a great service by letting us know how their talents are progressing. Over time, other, newer members learn to gauge who's being realistic and truthful in their posts and who is not (or might be misinterpreting their own progress, something that eventually and hopefully subsides). Whether it's useful to compare ourselves to our peers might be debatable, but it will happen. It's just human nature. I appreciate your comments on this matter and find you to be a very helpful member of SRP. Thank you.

Yes, I've gotten to really appreciate my little square point. It does the job. From experience, I can see yours is quite sharp. Cool looking blade.
