I've started going ATG on the first pass then touch up after with XTG. And i find it good, not sure why i used to work my way up from WTG then XTG and finally ATG. Just wondering if it's normal? or if it's not a good idea.

All that matters is that it works for you. I've tried to go atg with a first pass but I have a thick beard and it was fairly uncomfortable for me.
I also have a thick beard and I use the beard reduction method by going WTG, then XTG and ATG
I do 2 pass WTG and few touch ups in goatee area. My beard isn't that thick I guess compared to some I've seen but my razors sure don't seem to like it. I may need to start keeping my strop and balsa hone beside me for the second pass.
Its always best to start by shaving with WTG.
WTG first pass, then second pass is a mixture of ATG (in the easier areas) and XTG in places where it's difficult to get ATG (hollows to the sides of Adam's apple) or where it seems too dangerous to go ATG (upper lip - don't like the idea of going towards my nose.) Sometimes a touch-up (ATG) in difficult spots like hollows of neck and just below my jaw.
I vote for WTG then ATG. But it's more like Matt69 have described
I always start with a WTG pass.
After that it is usually a XTG in one direction followed by, on some spots, a XTG in the opposite direction.
Finally, I do a ATG on the spots that still need it to provide a BBS shave.
There's never a place on my face that gets more than 3 passes though:)
My process depends on what's happening that evening.
If I'm not honing, I'll do a nice two or three pass shave in the morning. If I am honing in the evening, I'll only do one pass so I have a bit of stubble.
I like to be clean shaven each morning before I leave the house for work....my obsessiveness doesn't leave me any choice.
My face won't tolerate ATG from any razor system, so it's wtg only for me and the results are more than acceptable.
For me it is relative to when my last shave was.
If 24 hours or less since my shave I almost always get away with a XTG and ATG for stubborn areas as a touch up.
If it has been 24 hours or more then I go WTG XTG ATG to reduce things in steps.
With the grain to across the grain...done. :)
+1 to the above.
I've never found a need to go ATG. I tried it a few times and ended up with a slight burning sensation and the shave was no closer than a careful XTG pass after the initial WTG.
North-South (scything when possible). South-North (scything when possible). Touch-ups. Works for me.
Due to the topography of my beard growth, my first WTG pass is actually a combo of WTG and XTG anyway, so then I can do a XTG on the areas that need it, which ends up ATG in some areas anyway. Then an ATG pure pass along the neck and jawline finishes it off.
So I guess it really depends on beard growth directions which of the passes it really is.

Mostly WTG and XTG with a bit of ATG if I feel like going real close. I don't find too much ATG necessary though.
I almost always do my first pass with the grain and then straight on to against the grain after that. I almost never go across the grain
I only shave my throat and use a combo XTG+ATG on an angle for two passes north to south. This in combo with cold shaving works great for me.I should also say I cold wash my throat with glycerine soap before the shave to get any dirt or oil off the skin.
I typically go WTG then XTG.
WTG, XTG, ATG and another ATG. When I really want BBS, touch-up in those hard to ATG with a straight places (upper lip, parts of my neck) with a DE.
When I started shaving with straight razors, I did 3 passes (WTG, XTG, ATG), no problems. Recently my skin is quite sensitive, so I only go for 2 passes (WTG, XTG); the XTG-pass ist mostly an AGAINST the grain pass due to coarse facial hair.
Ll post pics of my beard after my dental appt
It was a joke. I'm talking about your Avatar.
Hahahah Oh yea that's my son
My face simply will not allow me to do a XTG or ATG. But WTG really works well for me.
