Is there really a lot of diffence between a 6/8 and a 7/8? I've used a 5/8 and a 6/8. I'm thinking of getting into the bigger sizes.

Enough of a difference that your hold will feel different. They all shave well it all depends on how you like the feel :p
5/8 to a 7/8 is a big jump and if your not used to it can feel rather fumbly, but that doesn't take long to get past, maybe a shave or two.
I've been using 7/8's for so long now that a 5/8 feels kind of whimpy, and some downright uncomfortable in my hand, but I have larger hands...
Most 7/8's is heavier, and of course 1/8" wider :D
It's really all a matter of taste, try one and see what you think.
Personally I prefer 6/8's or wider, anything smaller feels like a toy :p And I feel I have slightly better control when honing and stropping the bigger blades.
As stated above, they all shave, but there are quite distinct differences in feel and maneuverability.
From my own experience, I'd say the 5/8 and 6/8 are the easiest to learn this sport on, but once you have the proper technique down, anything from a 3/8 to a 10/8 or even larger will do the job just fine.
I have them all and use them all however personally I find the 7/8s clumsy compared to a 5/8s.
When you jump from a 6/8s to a 7/8s the size and heft difference is quite remarkable.
5/8s always seem too small to me whereas a 6/8 or bigger feels just right. Go for it! :D
Thanks folks. I have my eye on the TI Loup et Béllier/Sheffield Silver Steel. I am just trying to decide between the 6/8 or 7/8. I have been using the Evidé Sonnant (6/8) with fairly good results. I also have a Dovo Bismark which (6/8) does not do it for me. Nothing wrong with it I guess but I have become drawn to the TI razors. Maybe a year from now I might think differently but for now the Singing Razors have won me over. Of course I would like a Wade and Butcher too. But I have not seen one that I really wanted to have.
I moved up to a 6/8 from a 5/8 and I love the size, weight and heft of the big blade. I have big hands but what I like most is that the big blades give you more control on the face and on the strop.
I've tried from 4/8 up to 8/8 and I have to say I have a preference for anything 6/8 and wider. I prefer my 13/16 and 8/8 over and above anything else.

Same experience for me. I have 7/8s and larger but truth be told my favorite is the 5/8. If you only have the 6/8 I would certainly go with the 7/8. You'll never know until you try. It may feel unwieldy at first but you'll get used to it. Even though 5/8 is my favorite I like my larger blades too.
Thanks for the tips. I guess if I do not like it I can always keep it with all the other shavers I do not use.
I personally used 5/8 and 6/8 only. I like the maneuverability of 6/8. Wish to try 7/8, or perhaps acquire one in the nearest future.
I found one of these at a antique mall last weekend. Mine has a little more smile at the toe, but otherwise identical. I cleaned it up and will hone it this week.
I've never owned a 7/8. If I find it's too much of a handful I'll sell it.

i prefer 6/8 and bigger. 5/8 is too light and small for me.
LoL. Well just to be contrary – I don’t like em bigger than 5/8 myself.
Downside of blades smaller than 7/8: Is not green, wastes water, (rinsing) wastes time, (rinsing) potential damage to blade from multible faucet exposures (rinsing) 7/8+++ rules.:)

Tried wiping for awhile, just could not get into it,is usefull for some things butt not for me:)
I think the big blades are great to look at, and easier to work on. But I usually shave with a 5/8. I stropped a 7/8 wedge and definitely didn't feel like I had more control of anything. Seemed like the weight of the blade had control. I don't know. I shaved with it once, and put it on the shelf. I love staring at it. But I don't shave with it at all. Same goes for two hollow ground 7/8's I own. They just sit there looking cool.
I am new to sr shaving but have fast become a fan of 6/8 razors. I have yet to try the 7/8 - but will.
Isn't that just wasting the lather? Don't you just use it from side to side until its gone and you relather?(:-)
I suppose you guys peen with a framing hammer as well. That little four ouncer just feels like a toy. :rofl2:Quote:

A Big + just my thought exactly.
I have 5/8-15/16 and I find I notice more of a difference in overall blade length(heel to toe), some of the longer blades make it kind of a pain to shave my face since my cheekbones and jawline have pretty tight corners. Shaving across the grain on my cheeks for example with a longer blade takes longer because I have to pay more attention or the center of my blade wont even touch my skin, sometimes I puff my cheek a tiny amount to make it flat. I've seen people cruise right from cheek or chin down past their jawline to the neck(Charlie's video of him using a one piece razor comes to mind), I cant do that either, my jawline is a logistical nightmare to shave and a long blade makes it harder to maneuver.
On a semi related topic, I shaved with a DE for the first time in 6 months and was baffled by how simple it was to get whatever angle I needed, but maneuverability wont trump the joy of a straight.
Is there a size chart with pics? I want to know the difference between blades? I am lost with 5/8 and 7/8 etc. Please point in im the right direction. What the sizes mean etc.
Ok, there are Eight Eighths or 8/8 to one inch. So if you were to measure the blade from spine to edge as a part, or whole of one inch, you will get a part i.e 5/8th's of an inch or a whole i.e 8/8th's or one whole inch. Blades larger than one inch are still measured by the rule of eight equal subdivisions except now we might say 9/8th's (9/8) or 10/8 etc. Hope that helps. If I've only added to the confusion, I'm sorry.
