SR8 & DE shavers?
I have gotten the sense from some posts that a number of forum contributors who shave mostly with straights switch from time to time to other razors: double edge or...other. Is this common? Or rare? Or pretty mixed and individual? For those who do so, how often? Just curious. Thanks.

I use straights, de's and se's. I mostly use the straights, but sometimes I just feel like using one of the others. No rhyme or reason to it at all.:)
-
I shaved with a doubled edge since I was a teenager, now I pretty much use a straight most of the time.
-
I went from cartridge to straight razor. Then started experimenting with DE's.
Over the past month, I've shaved more with a DE than with a straight. Next month, might be back to straight-razor shaving.
I won't use a straight if I'm rushed. And my schedule has been getting busier.
Once you've mastered the techniques of both straights and DE's, the question becomes something like:
. . . do you want scrambled eggs or cereal for breakfast?

mumpig,
Like Theseus, Scookum & Charles, I use a safety razor by way of a change (mostly GEM/EverReady/Star SEs); I use them when I am away on business for a day or so - if I am away for a week or greater, I take a straight & my paddle strop.
Have fun !
Best regards

I bat for both teams fairly equally these days. Straight or DE. Makes no never mind to me ;).

I use Straights mostly but when rushed, traveling or just too lazy, I use a DE.

SR8 & DE shavers?
Mostly straights with a DE for travel and mixing things up at home. Though I tend to lean towards more aggressive DE's when I do use them. I guess it gives me a better feel like a straight.

Started shaving over 40 years ago with a DE and have used all types of safety razors till 6 months ago when I tried straights. I have all the time in the world to enjoy a leisurely straight shave every morning being retired now. I use them exclusively at home. If I travel by car I will use my Fat Boy DE and if I travel by air it will be disposables both for convenience sake. At this point I get good shaves with any of them but straights offer the most enjoyment and satisfaction to use by far.

Went from Carts to DE and from DE to Straights.
Now Straights at home and on the road when the trip is long enough to check a bag - and then its a Feather SS or CJB (less hardware, lower maintenance, less time & great shave)
Backup on the road is a DE and a disposable Cart thrown in, cause I'm a belts and suspenders kind of guy when it comes to travel.
The only time I use the Cart is on those trips with 12-19 hour plane rides and you can't carry a DE blade or its a short trip.
And I actually see more blood with a DE on the few times I use it than I do with a Straight - I assume that is lack of practice and operator error.
But oh, the joy of having choices...to have what was once a chore become something akin to a Tea Ceremony of quiet reflection...

I use a straight at home, and a DE when travelling.

As far as I'm concerned there is no rule that says you can only shave with one type of razor. Due to time constraints I often shave with a DE during the work week, but weekends are reserved for my straights without question. I can get outstanding, enjoyable shaves from both. Just my $0.02

I too am equal opportunity. I own and operate SE, DE and straight razors. No real rotation I just pick up a safety razor as the mood hits. More times than not though, I use a straight. I've had great shaves from everything in my rotation.

Time is the fiend for me and straights. If I have the time I love using a straight. Otherwise it's a d.e..been being rushed a lot lately though. Weekends are the best time for me and a straight.
-
I use both, straight's & DE's. BUT NO CARTRIDGE RAZORS! :nono:

Much obliged, gentlemen. I appreciate the input. For the last 3 months I have used a straight exclusively but just placed an order for a DE and blade sampler with SRD. I take the warnings about the need for caution and technique seriously. Seems they're a different animal with a distinct risk and require their own approach. But having an option seems like a cool idea.

Over the last month or two I've been using my Merkur DE a little more.
It's partly due to laziness because it gets me a quick, acceptable one pass shave. I also enjoy it because in many ways a DE shave is a skill on it's own.
I always keep the DE at hand with a blade loaded, even when I'm using the straight more. It's good to have at hand for quick touchups or if the straight isn't working out.

I've been shaving with a Gillette Adjustable DE for years before recently transitioning to a SR. I use the SR for shaving WTG and the DE for shaving ATG & minor touchups. Otherwise, I'll mainly use the DE when traveling.

Not that different an animal is the DE with respect to the basics. Use a sharp blade, a light touch and watch the angle. Have fun.

I usually use straights. I was recently lent a DE and found it to give quite a nice shave. I'm going to look around for a nice old Gillette in the near future! But, I tend to favor straights.

SR8 & DE shavers?
Enjoy almost all of them that I've tried. DE's ;SE's ;(most)Straights. Right now I'm into this straight thing. Still going strong, not sure how much longer it'll last. But, it's been a good run so far!

I mostly use a straight but, I still, from time to time, use a DE or SE razor. I enjoy using all of them!!
