Default How'd I do on my first eBay razor

OK OK. I know we don't ask for a valuation on here. And you know what I don't really need one. But what I need my friends is a nod of approval or a head shake of disgust on this razor I just bought. Its a wade and butcher with " The Celebrated Medium Size Hollow Ground Razor" on the blade and the usual wb Sheffield etc on the tang. I paid 19.30 shipped. Here it is and feel free to be honest with me. I intend to restore it myself.

It has some heavy hone wear, but looks solid otherwise. For < $20 I think you did fine.

The hone wear is the only turn off for me but. The price was good 12.50 plus shipping. Hope I can make it as pretty as my others.

sure it has character (hone wear) just shows it has been loved & used a lot
the scales look solid give them a bath in neetsfoot for a week & a sand they will come up a real treat I bet

I would go for it anyway it is a $20 learning curve either way, fix her up, give it a hone if you get the edge on it all is good

if you blow it, it is not a total loss because you still learn from it
or it could become your favourite razor
    Saved,
    to shave another day.

I think it a great buy for the money. While the hone wear is heavy, it has a shape that I like a lot and the blade stamping looks like it could stand up to some sanding. If you decide to do some restoration, the wear will blend in a bit when the same color as the rest of the blade.
I say if, because I'm one of those who are not squeamish about using a blade with all its age related warts. There is an appeal for me in using something that shows so much age and use. If you can get a clean edge on it then that might be all you need. You have to weigh that against the sense of accomplishment you will get by restoring some of its former beauty.
Over all, I prefer to pay more for less hone wear.

I like to leave a little tarnish on the ones I've done. But the the others had no hone wear so I'm venturing into new territory in that regard. I don't like the mirror finish look that most go for. Mostly because its to shiny and secondly because it looks like shit if you even breath on it much less shave with it. But I guess I'll know more once the razors in hand.
