why did i win this?
I hate being the only bidder on an item. It makes me think I bought something either very bad or overpriced. After I bid on it, I think the edge isn't straight. The toe looks bigger than the heel. Optical illusion? I should receive in 2-3 weeks so I can measure then. 7/8 in horn.
edit: To include the price. USD 60. Yes, even at that price 60 can be too much for a 7/8 if it turns out to be bad.

The toe being bigger than the heel is not a problem and is common on that style of the razor.
That style was fairly common around 1830-1950 I think, especially if you take a look at old Bengalls that were made in that time frame.

If you mean that the blade is wider at the toe than the heel it could be. Many razors were made like that. It looks to be in really good condition. Nice grab.

Wicked nice buy -- sometimes razors just get missed, and you get a great buy. Sometimes a dozen people are churning up the waters around razors I wouldn't touch. Don't keep us in suspense, how much?
-
Nice condition heavy grind razor, I don't think you need worry about being the sole bidder.

On the last picture it looks like the blade has a frown. No biggie, looks like a steal, how much did you pay ?

Winter great time to sell.
Summer great time to buy.

I think you should count yourself lucky. The razor looks great to me, I can see no flaws, even the scales appear to be in exellent condition. Have it properly honed and enjoy, I am sure you will like it.
-
Nice score I have a W&B with a similar line to it doesn't look like hone wear so original shape most likely
-
I was watching that one. Glad it worked out for you. Something about the seller or where he was kept me from bidding.
Enjoy

Hello, I can reassure you, my best razor has the same look, it's just 6/8 but it's an extremely soft and sharpened piece.
Lucky boy! ;)

Heavy, plain beasties like that sometimes garner fewer bids. Nothing wrong. Just not everyone's cup of tea.
The box is cool!

Pics aren't great, but it looks to me like it's been buffed. Last photo looks like maybe the remains to heel to toe lines, and maybe spine to edge as well. And the middle section of the spine looks like it may have a flat area, as if hone wear were buffed off.
I avoid blades that I think may have been restored unless I know who did the work or it looks minor or it's a great deal. You never know what the hone wear will look like when it starts to come back, nor how long it will take to reset the bevel.
The fact that there is tons of steel on the blade can be as bad as it can good. Sure, there is lots to work with to fix any issues if you know how, but you can also create huge issues without realizing it if you don't know better.

Nice piece, looks great to me. Grabs like this make it hard for me to STICK to my guns resisting my RAD

I got it for 60 just the razor. Pretty cheap imho which is why I thought I might have missed something on the pictures. The pictures are from ebay. I bid with 2-3 hours left on the clock. Thought I would be sniped. I have not seen a 7/8 go for less than 100 before.
Good to hear that the blade is supposed to be bigger at the toe. I even took a ruler to my screen (which looks really weird at work). The ad said it was 1880 to 1900. I think it is because of the hand forged stamp.
I was pretty unsure about the ebay seller at first too as he has a lot of stuff for sale but virtually no bidders on any of them. He has good feedback (100%) though. I am sure he did not do the restore as the other razors are sold as is and they are not in as nice a condition. I don't think I see any hone wear so maybe it is a regrind?
if it turns out to be a great or decent shaver, i will just be missing an 8/8 razor.
edit: I posted a picture of my wostenholm by accident. I am going to use it as my first restore project and wasn't on planning to post it unless i was successful. If I fail I am going to reuse the scales. No idea how to remove an attachment.
