Project. My first horn scales

OK guys. I ordered a horn blank on Ebay. Got it just the other day. Went at it today. Now this is the second set of scales I've ever made but the first set in horn. I got lots of help with questions before I started. So here you go. Not too bad if I say so myself.

The colors are opposite. This is because after cutting them out I got out the belt sander and got carried away. Went too deep on one of them. Took a look at the material I had left and it was just enough to make a replacement. Was so happy about having enough that I forgot all about matching up the color. 50% chance and I lost. Oh well, I'm happy with them. Now to make a Wedge and get them pinned. Maybe later or tomorrow.

Great job for a first set. I kinda like the color offset.

I think the offset colors are very cool.

I'd say that's a good job for ANY attempt, GasMan! (And I too like the color offset), Now get a blade in there and show us the finished piece!

I would not loose any sleep over the color thing. They look great.

just made the wedge out of same material. That seems to be the tough part for me. Getting the right spacing and all. got it made now but will need to wait till tomorrow for the pinning.

A Fjaril Razor is going in these scales. Fjaril is Swedish for Butterfly. Cant find anything besides what I written on this razor. Looked it up on all the lists I can find and still nothing. It says R. Barlach's Import on the back of the tang.
Anyone know anything on this one? Not that it maters. The scales are made for it now.

Scales look great and I think this will look real good when finished.

No help on the razor though, will be here watching

Nice work on the scales. It is surprisingly easy to reverse a pattern on a set of book matched scales. Mark the insides of each scale before cutting, then glue them together and shape.

Make sure of the orientation before you cut.

Lead is the traditional spacer material for horn scales. You can buy 1/8-inch lead from hobby stores, for sail plane weights. Glue onto a stick with double sided tape or one of the scales and shape on sandpaper. Just takes a few minutes.

You should re-shape that heel before you put it on the scales. The Stabilizer is probably responsible for the heel hone ware and the uneven edge.

Bring the edge corner forward of the stabilizer.

I hadnt noticed that. Thanks for pointing it out. I got some stones comming in the mail so ill wait till i get them then work on the heal next weekend. Its just a little amount that i see should come off. Might post up a pic of my heal fix idea.

Guess ill get some lwad for the wedge and try again. Looks like this project will be longer than i thought. Thats ok. Ill post up what i got now mocked up with mucro fasteners. But finished will be a while. Now i can start on another. Cool.

These were the weights I was able to find at the hobby store. Just barely big enough. If I could melt them of flatten them just a little would be better. Guess I'll see how it comes out.

Getting rid of all the red ink. Well, maybe just a little less at the edge.

I make lead wedges out of pure lead round balls that are used for black powder shooting. I flatten and taper them by hammering and then finish on sandpaper. Keep the sandpaper wet to minimize airborne lead particles.

.36 cal maxi works great too.
Mine are of bullet lead ,harder, and stays clean longer. This one was poured 4-5 yrs. ago.

Sure, as long as they are a soft enough alloy to upset and not crack or crumble. I use the lead balls because I traded my .54 cal Jäger rifle and found a stash of ball for it I otherwise have no use for.

Ill try hammering on one of these and see what happens. As long as it dont crack or crumble i guess ill be ok.

Here it is as of now but I'll be doing more so it will change a little.

Looks good, but I would take just a bit more off, to move the corner forward just a bit more, where the green arrow is.

The red arrow is where the edge ends now, and may be enough, but still might hit. You want to be well in front of the start of the stabilizer, blue arrow.

You can put some sharpie ink on the spine, the edge and the stabilizer, ink all of the stabilizer. Then hone on a high grit hone and see if you are hitting any of the stabilizer. Check also that you are making good contact on the spine and edge at the heel. A stroke or two will tell the story.

Didn't think I needed to go that far forward but if you say so. I thank you for the picture and pointing this out to me. I knew it was a bit under the stabilizer but didn't think it was too bad. Now I know and have a better idea on what SHOULD be done. Thanks again. I'll get my stones next week and will work on this next weekend. I think it will all turn out great when done and wont need anything besides some shave soap for then on. Well, maybe a touching on the stones now and then but I'll be happy to know its done and done correctly!

Here it is after grinding the heal some. I need to work on this thing some more but I need to learn to hone before I go any farther I'm afraid. Its a long trip but its fun learning. Hope this heal repair is close to what you were saying.

Yup, looks good, should be much easier to hone now.
