Bicycle ride = Finds

Today my wife and I rode out to the "Old Town Clovis" area just for giggles. On the way we stopped at a few antique shops and book stores. While i wasn't looking for anything in particular (I was also being picky as SWMBO was there ) I did manage to find a few bargins that I couldn't pass up.

2 Wade and Butchers and a Boker Keen Cutter, $30 total
"1000 Razors, priced and Illustrated" by Bill Schroeder. This booklett is in great shape and at $10 I was ok with getting it. Lots of interesting names and drawings to look threw

Ya these are some dark and pitty buggers but the edges are good, one small chip on the W&B Hollow Ground and it will come out fine it seems. The Boker has a broken back scale and I think I have a back saved somewhere, but I'm also looking for scale info in another thread conserning marked Boker scales.

Already started cleaning off the gunk and soaking the scales in Neatsfoot oil, see what tomorow brings

You found one of my secret stashes! Some of those stores are gold mines waiting to be looted. I know that you probably saw lots of razors that you walked away from too. Did you make it to the shop that had that 4/8 Henkels?

Saw a couple Henkels, one twin. Not alot of razors really this time, a couple shops had alot but most didn't have any. LOTS of DE's though...

Ya I passed on many as they where ether higher than I wanted to pay at the moment or to clean/new era razors that I wasn't looking for. So there are still alot of goodies left behind

What I really enjoyed was riding out there on bikes and walking around all the shops. Saw many brushes, knives, and DE's looking for new homes. Saw a "Corn" knife in Ivory for $10 but passed on it, again not what I was after. This was just a fun outing and made all the better by riding our bicycles out there to see it all

Well here are the current shots of the W&B's. The scales where so dry I was nervous about working on them till they had some conditioning. I wrapped a paper towel around them and soaked that in Neatsfoot oil for a week. Last night I unwrapped them and wrapped them in dry paper towels to draw off any loose stuff. Tomorrow I'll see about the condition of them. I'm hoping I can just tighten them up, or take them off and sleave the pilot hole (lots of play there) to help tighten them up. Ya they are a bit worm eaten and I doubt I can save both, but even than I may be able to save something, we shall see...

Just an idea for you...have you tried mixing a bit of epoxy with tempura powder? I had a old airbrush with a handle that had been dinged up and I bought some cheap tempura paint and let it dry in the sun until only the powder remained. After that, just mix up some epoxy paint and stir in the tempura powder until you get the color you want. Apply and let dry and sand to suit...worked great and really stabilized it even better. Color matching should be easy enough on black scales.

Will have to give that a try. One set is warped quite a bit and I'm probably going to boil em to flatten em again. After they dry I could give that a shot...
