Latest acquisition: Joh. Engstrom frameback
-
I have a similar one like this too, and the markings on the tang are realy confusing since all of them are different. Maybe it says only one date on the box?
-
Really interesting spine and blade arrangement. I like it.
-
I have a Heljestrand frameback with similar tang stamp. It also has more cities and dates on the blade. My understanding is that the dates and cities were years and places where the cutlers won medals at international competitions such as Worlds Fairs.
-
I need to send it out for a competent honing...
...then I'll let you know how it shaves!
-
Sibban, no date on the box. I did find out they were made between 1845-1918 or thereabouts.
-
Ahh alright Streetprowler, solved for me also then;) im just waiting to get home now and put mine in a nice pair of scales. I dont know about you but the one i have was actualy able to cut armhair when i picked it up so i cant wait to hear the shaving result from you. Take care!

I have two of of those razors in Ivory. They are great to shave with.
-
I've got a few of those. All easy to hone and shave great! The last date on the blade is 1889, so sometime after that
-
That one is in great shape. That's a neat acquisition.
-
Thanks, Max. I still have not decided if I am going to hone it myself or send it out to one of these experts. Pretty good edge on it when I got it - I may just take the plunge.
-
Well, I am happy to report that I did not completely wreck the blade. On the other hand, I need to send it out to be honed up. And I need to practice my honing skills.
Darn...

+1 on how great these shave. Joh Engstrom was in production from 1874 -1918 & the Dannemora mine is back in production. Gotta love Swedish steel :)
-
I have come across a fair number of these locally worn to a nub. It is nice to see what they are supposed to look like. I have one that is in reasonable condition, great shaver, but again its nice to see what they are supposed to look like.

What a beautiful specimen, I'd love to have such a frameback in my rotation.
