So what are the odds that...
This is tortoise shell and not dyed horn?

Just won it, I put a bid in just to see and won by default when I didn't expect to.
Just in case the link doesn't work, it's item number 290801170323
I'm hoping that the color difference in the carved areas indicates tortoise, but I like it even if it's not.
So what are the odds that...
Me too.
It's hard to tell (on my phone) but it looks interesting either way.
Re: So what are the odds that...
I'm good with it now matter what, but fingers crossed for shell. I'd still be happy with celluloid even. It's pretty!
Re: So what are the odds that...
No idea at all. I just know that it's a beautiful material and I love it.
Re: So what are the odds that...
If it's the entire shells they're probably illegal to sell. I don't know that, but I suspect it.

Carving bone or tortoise that way would be a huge labor of love -- just think what you would have to do to make that happen in bone or tortoise. Not to mention that it's done on both sides. I think it has to be some molded product and celluloid is about the only one available in that time period. Still beautiful workmanship. Nice pick.
My thinking was that shell was pressed into shape in the first place. Pressing a design would only be a matter of using a different mold. That said, it's hard to tell on my phone, but I'm totally good with celluloid just the same.

I certainly will!
All I have is the camera on my phone, but I have really good lighting at work and I'll do my best.
Stay tuned for better pics, before and after I clean and polish the scales and restore the blade.
Re: So what are the odds that...
Looking at the very last picture I can see what appears to be the blotchy white /gray spots from age or moisture that the article talked about. I think. That's encouraging to me!
Re: So what are the odds that...
I know! And it probably won't even ship until Monday.... Gawd.

Natural tortoise is less perfect, less clear than the rest. I don't know any better way to describe it.
I handled a set at a gun show a couple of months ago. They were badly chewed by bugs and delaminating, but no question that they were shell.
I've got my fingers crossed on these.

Yeah that's ok, I've got another old Sheffield that I accidentally got on Ebay coming tomorrow. That'll keep me busy until Friday.
I've got to stay off Ebay for a while.
Re: So what are the odds that...
The scales are definitely celluloid. But they are beautiful! Put a few pics up in the show and tell section. Only cleaned the grunge off with simple green and a toothbrush so far. Really a beauty though, it'll look great all shiny and polished and clean!
