Tried to get an edge on this and it is WAY BEYOND my skill level. :aargh:
I have honed a couple of others I have gotten with pretty good results but this is a DIFFERENT animal!
Looks like I will have to send this one out to get an edge put on it! :mad:

I see you like the abuse.... Not that im judging, i would have picked that project too if the price was right. Looks like you've given an unlikely candidate new life. Good deal! Lets see it when its done!

It's a good idea to try setting a bevel pre restoration. Can save a lot of work if you know straight up front what the steel & geometry's like.

Yep, like throwing rocks at a tank. :p

Edge restorations on wedges start at around 320 grit for me. Theres a lotta history to rub out let alone your own sanding.

And then there's tape. I have a Sheffield, mid 1800's with the spine mostly honed away. I used 3 to 4 layers of tape to basically re-establish a spine, which narrows the bevel, gives it a little more strength and makes establishing the bevel and subsequent honing much easier. At 4 layers it can get spongy, but you can get through that. With what you've already done it'll form a double bevel, but you've got plenty of steel at that edge to support it. It works well and my old Sheffield is now easy to hone and gives a great shave. Hey, it's worth a try!' :D

Edit2: Gooser and Oz are more observant than me! You really can't do this with a 4k, unless you have lots of time and really like to hone, really, really like it.

i just noticed this .. yes id try to get bevel setter if your gonna be doing the ebay thing .... you could do it on the 4k but id assume you will be there awhile (ive never tried on anything higher then a 1k)also make sure the blade isnt warped , do some searching on here ( bevel setting " " marker test " " janorton thread " ) are all very good places to learn a lot and there is tons of info ..

I Think I Will Try And Hone It Or Get It Honed Before I Go ANY further...

I did try tape. Up to 4 pieces, alas I am NEW to ALL of this and I might be stretching myself THIN on learning . I tend to do that with everything I take a liking to though. :)

Not sure about it being a HOWARD :shrug:, but that is the box it came with and the way it was listed. Didn't see alot about howard SR's and as someone said on here before. If there is no info on it it might be RARE.. So I took a chance!

From the little bit of reading I have been doing it looks like the Chosera 1K is "THE WAY" to go.
Now to justify getting one as I only have 1 SR that need to be set... LOL
