Thanked: 603Request for Discussion [New Forum in "The Gallery"]
Q: Where's a guy gotta go for info about photography?
A: Everywhere!!!
IOW, there's no (more-or-less) central, go-to location, for things "photographic". What's available is an Advanced Search, here or elsewhere, and a hit-or-miss laundry list of threads and/or posts.
I'd like to propose a solution: Create a new forum -- "Photography" -- within "The Gallery", alongside "Custom Builts and Restorations", "Show and Tell", and "Shave Of The Day". For information -- cameras, how-to, techniques, lighting, etc. -- NOT yet-another location for "razor porn".
Is there a procedure (beyond what I've done by posting this) for doing so?
Please advise.

Thanked: 3215Great idea, I too have searched for specific information on photographing small reflective items like razors and knives. There is not a lot of information available and certainly not in one spot.
For me it is trial and error, lighting an inexpensive light box and leaning about bouncing light have helped.
No doubt we have some guys that know the ins and outs of photographing razors, look at the Shave of the Day and Hone of the Day for great examples.
At the very least it would be great to collect the information on one spot. Walter Sorrells has a great basic You Tube post on photographing knives.

Thanked: 56There's a detailed tutorial in the library, but that is about photographing razors. Not any discussions of cameras or anything.
If you're wondering I'm probably being sarcastic.

I'd say to contact a Moderator or Gugi and let them know of your ideas. or a request for them to look at this thread. Not all threads get looked at right away by the higher-ups. That would be my opinion on how to go about it.
It's just Sharpening, right?

If you want to create a new dedicated sub forum pertaining to a particular topic YOU have to do the legwork justifying the request.
That means providing numbers like how many photography relating posts we have on the site. It takes some time and research.
Meanwhile there should be a photography related thread in "The finer things" like we have at least one for watches and another for dogs as examples.
If the numbers justify it we can present it to Ivan for consideration.
A giveaway is those topics usually remain at the top of the subject list in the forum because there is continual interest and postings. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Thanked: 3215Just post a thread in the Workshop Forum on photographing razors, with a title like Razor Photos of the Day, how to. Or any title that is relevant and searchable.
The workshop forum is highly read and the most appropriate existing forum. Few reads in the Finer Things Forum. Search photographing watches and dogs see what you get.
No jumping through hoops, research or justifying. Just how would one “provide numbers like how many photography relating posts we have on the site?”
If it has an easily searchable title and of interest, (god knows there are some photos on this site) it will get hits and more will add content.
I know my I phone, and cameras are capable of much more than I know how but, finding that information…
