How is anyone's rights, violated in a forum.

This is a known scam going on for years and it is being done by people all over the country. Settle or hire a lawyer and pay 10 times that amount in legal fees to defend yourself.

They go around and look for issues like no ramp for a wheelchair or handicap parking. I'm not sure what a web site issue is maybe they want the site in braille or something.

Just proof that sleazeballs are coming out of the woodwork everywhere. Just hearing about this makes my blood boil.

As sad as it is we have allowed it to happen to us in the US. Although we may not actively be participants the fact that we have not actively forced tort reform makes us all vulnerable. McDonald's was in large part responsible because they have had a policy of settle in any suit regardless of the merit. This has made it clear to sheisters that entities with deep pockets are easy targets.

From what I see I agree with Paul. This is a US phenomenon made possible by your tort laws which make it trivial to sue anyone for anything, for a ridiculous amount of money. What also doesn't help is that it's legal for lawyers to sue in return for a slice of the cake.

Anyway I think this site is not really at risk since Ivan is the de-facto owner and he is in Europe, so serving him or taking action isn't realistic. Iirc even the domain is registered with a non-US registrar. Same for my place.

Shaving sites with US based owners probably are at risk, simply because of the cookie cutter nature of the lawsuit.

The problem with Tort Reform is it hits everyone. If you limit awards then when you are involved in something and you life is forever altered and you are a true victim via negligence and you can only get chicken feed you might feel differently.

Yeah, that's what all the lawyers keep saying. I'm not saying there's no truth to it but what are we supposed to do? Besides, tort reform means more than limiting settlement amounts. It also means courts reviewing what cases they will hear and throwing out the bogus. Judges should be doing this but, again, judges are lawyers.

The nitty gritty is that, like everything else, it's always one bad kid who gets everyone thrown out of the pool. As much as I hate giving power to the government what might put a stop to it is making ALL lawyers work for the court system instead of allowing them to be privately hired. Then you theoretically could not buy better justice.

Damages should be actual damages though. The way things are in the US, people regard it as winning the jackpot.
Additionally, making it so that you always have to pay the lawyer a) discourages lawyers from just throwing around lawsuits to see if anything sticks b) discourages people from suing unless they have an actual case they can win.

Take this example about some guy 'representing' disabled people and making ADA claims. 25K per person is a number based on jack shit because a) those people were not actually users of the website, and b) they didn't have actual damages.

Yup. It's called Lawfare

It should be that if the lawyer doesn't win they have to pay the defendants' legal fees out of their own pocket.
