The thing is firstly, this is not going to be a limited membership elite group. It is going to be people who have been active and know what they are doing. Mentors don't even need to agree with each other.

For example, some of you like coticules and think they are the best stone. I don't think so. I think Japanese naturals are the best. Others will swear by Shaptons all the way. All 3 opinions can be valid and funded in experience.

EDIT: So Mentorship does not have anything to do with e.g. an 'SRP party line regarding honing'. We don't even agree with each other on such things.

Glen, With all do respect, When you put a label on someone, and single them out, and a new person sees that. He automatically thinks, that this person must know what there talking about. Correct? Shouldn't these representitives of our beloved forum be knowledgeable in all areas...Maybe I misunderstanding the meaning of the work "Mentor"

This is point, It's not a question of likes or dislikes, it's a question of knowledge, How does a Belgium coticule stack up to a Japanese natural, stuff like that....

mentor: a trusted teacher, guide, and friend.
We are all here to learn and pass on our knowledge of the of straight razor.
I hope that we can continue to do this.
I have made many friends and have learned new things from old and new.
I am a mentor and have mentors, I DON"T know it all.
In my short time here I have learned alot, and hope I have helped others.
    Thanks you everyone

    Tim

Also remember that not everyone is expert at everything. I've added Mike Blue as a mentor, even though his post count is not big, because he is an expert in his area. That does not automatically mean that he knows about aftershaves, soaps and brushes.

Y'know, as they say in New Jersey, not for nothing...... the green things created dissension and controversy. I ended up with a lot of them and I always felt weird because I had more than Randydance, mparker, AFDavis, and Heavydutysg to name a few.... that know more than I do about straight razors and honing them. This isn't the first time I have posted to that affect.

IMO, whether you have green chiclets or a blue badge it isn't long before people will figure out if you know what you are talking about. It is early on in the new mentor badge thing and I don't know who has them and who doesn't but I have been around long enough to know who's experience and opinions on SRP that I respect and listen to regardless of badges or green chiclets. I hope no one will throw the baby out with the bath water with this new mentor business.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Btw I am participating in this discussion on and off atm. I am not monitoring this thread continuously. I am with my family and we are having a bbq. Well, my father is bbqing for the first time ever, on the bbq I gave him so I need to keep an eye on things if I don't want to eat charcoal.

    Sorry for the derailment.

Hah! Positive attitude is not one of the phrases used to describe me!

Now, If some new guy has a question, and "Mentor" posts, especially a junior mentor, and then I post. Who's he gonna believe, as I said, what's the sense of me even posting. We don't need no stinkin' badges, WE have join dates...Isn't that enought. Why are we so quick to label people. Mentor this, Mod that. Super mod this, cmon guys, where all adults here. I'm gonna make up a title for my self, Super Pain in that ass guy....
I have seriously disagreed with some of the higher echelons. I agree with your concern about the labels but you can overcome it by being RIGHT, if there is a right and wrong in a given instance. Most of this stuff is more nuanced than that. I lubricate my razors differently than most people. I mention it occasionally. It's not better or worse, it's just different. Different opinions are different options. Hopefully new members will figure that out.

Bruno, I totally understand what your saying. Just, IMHO, labels are bad.
I feel someone's join date and post count should be a clear indicator as to their knoweledge, or simply what they say, and somtimes not. Some guys have a low post count, but have been members of other forums for some time, and you can tell that just by reading their posts. It's just that Mentor implies "teacher' and I don't know that willingness to help is enough in that respect.
