Thanks Etiquette

I know that this might sound funny, but is it possible to be overly-thanky? For example: If you thank someone for a useful post and then in turn ask a question or illicit some response, to which, the same person replies; should they be thanked again? Is there a limit to the number of times that you should be thanking a single person within the same thread? Or, should every bit of useful information be recognized? I don't want to seem ungrateful, but I don't want the sheer number of my thanks to come across as insincere either. THANKS.

There are no rules, official or otherwise, so I believe you can thank or not thank as much or as little as you want or don't want.:)

Here is what I do and look for...

If somebody takes their time to directly answer a question for you, you should thank them, even if it was just with a link to the pertinent info... They took their time to do it...

If there is a post with tons of good info and you found it helpful to you even if it wasn't exactly directed to you, you should say thanks...

Basically if somebody does something that you find helpful then heck with it, say thanks...

As to over thanking, hmmm that is a tuff one, I err to the side of many thanks rather than few thanks hehehe

No rules per se, gratitude is due as you see fit. You can thank me if you wish, I wont be offended! LOL

I view it just like saying thanks out in the "real world" lol. If I appreciate what someone has posted or if touches me in some way then there's nothing wrong with saying thanks as many times as you need. If someone takes the time to leave a comment or help you...why not :)

Should a boundary exist for one gentleman to thank another? For one lady to show gratitude to another?

Exactly, then, how does one determine what level of gratitude deserves a "thank you"?

Should I, therefore, not thank someone whose advice, perhaps, falls short of the concrete even though he or she has tried? Does the expert who offers detailed advice, then, deserve more thanks than the one who has tried but failed to match the expert's level of knowledge?

Civility and good manners — a gentleman's and a lady's way — dictate a thank you for, if nothing else, acknowledging that someone has given me the courtesy to respond to my question, or comment.

So, ladies and gentlemen, thank you for reading.

i tend to use the thanks button as an englishman uses the word cheers..

if i like what was said.. i hit the thanks button.. if it was particularly useful.. i reply with the word thanks..

and as a general rule.. pretty much any post that comes from either jimmy or obie end up warranting a thanks.

I look at it like this. If someone cares enough to help me out with a question i have or to instruct me on how to better do something i think its only right i thank them to show them i acknoloage that they took the time to do somethign for me.

Is there a way to see what posts that people thanked you for? Not that I am raking up the thanks but would like to know what I said that people found worthwhile.

Yes, go to your user public profile, click on the statistics tab, and then view "all thanked posts".

In my case, to go back to the original question, I don't usually hand out a lot of thanks - only to those posts that I find are particularly helpful, insightful, or brave (calling a spade a spade so to speak).

I like to think that by being selective about which posts I thank, that they carry some weight to them (kinda like when my grandfather actually offered a compliment - he very rarely did that, so when he did, you know you did something truly remarkable).

I think there is some confusion about how to utilize this feature. I want to be thankful, and grateful when I am thanked, but it is not always clear to me whether or not to do so in a post I read. It's not something I instinctively do, but whether or not I click the Thanks button I want all of you to know that I have found very useful information here and I appreciate it very much.

I believe it was Cicero who said: "A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but the parent of all other virtues."

I can understand what the OP is talking about. Just to echo what's been said, Yes, Go ahead and Thank a poster for any information they provide you. They took the time to do so. Should you Thank someone for posting a pic of their new razor or scuttle?
Why not, They took the time to share it with you, especially if you enjoyed it, or found it useful in some way.

Personally, It's Thanks enough for me knowing I've helped someone, whether they click it or not...Doesn't bother me. I know for a fact many members help each other behind the scenes, It may be sharpening a blade, sharing info, or giving someone a shaving cream sample, maybe a stone, what have you....That's what this is all about, helping each other.

I think its really poor form not to thank someone when you're a poster asking for help and someone replies. You don't even have to use the "thanks" button, just a post with "thanks for the replies" is good. I've seen posters on many different forums ask for help with something then not bother to thank the people that took the time to post for them. It usually irritates me.

Other then that I'm often confused with the whole thanks etiquette, myself.

Yes, a Thanks is surely a Thanks! There are a few forums where thanks are not allowed! I am thankful that posts are made. It is most educational and useful! Let's give thanks where we can! THANKS!

Heck when I get my order form micky-Ds I say thanks,just the way I was raised,no you cant over thank someone,especially if they take the time to try and answer a question for you IMHO

You can't thank posts from threads you open up from the New Posts page. It took me awhile to figure that out.

Right click the "thanks" button and select "open in new tab". That will add your thanks to the post.

OK, what if you've used up your thanks to a poster and you want to become positively effusive with your undying gratitude?
