Question Starter kits, a new sub-category for the "Shaving Equipment" section?

    Hello all,

as I commented/suggested in another post ["http://straightrazorpalace.com/begin...ting-sets.html"], I believe it would be nice and convenient to have a sub-section of the "Shaving Equipment" section dedicated to starter kits.

It could be about basic sets (razor and strop only). Or complete wet shaving sets (razor, strop, brush, bowl, etc.)

This post is both to bring up this idea and to do a poll to see if it is really needed/wanted.

    Thank you all,
    Christophe.

I don't understand why there is a need for a separate forum section. Forum sections serve organizational purposes only, so that it's easier for people to find threads on particular topic. A quick look shows that each of our forum sections has between 150 and 5000 threads.

If there are several hundred threads on starter kits I guess we can think of separating them off in their own section, but at present this is not the case. Hence I don't see where's the need for this.

I would have to agree with Gugi on this one the beginner section pretty much serves this purpose already. If you posted there and didn't get the responses you wanted you can try re-posting with different wording. Or use the advance search and type in shaving sets and set it to only search the beginners forum. This will give you a couple hundred threads to read and decided what you want to do.

Gugi I do have question that would go to helping this is issue. Has the issues we were having with review sections been fixed? (ie. problems posting pics and people logging in to write reviews. If so I think the site should try and get a big push going on writing reviews like what was done with the map.

Yeah, the review system needs fixing, but the next step that needs to be done is beyond my paygrade, so I guess it's on hold at the moment.

I understand why you would want to see something like this, because it can be overwhelming to try and decide where to begin. I've read other posts asking, "What can you get for $100, $150?," etc.

The most helpful thing I read was this article: Straight Razor Shaving: Is it For You?. The guy who wrote it had a stressful job and needed some quality time for himself. Shaving the old fashioned way, becoming proficient at shaving and keeping his equipment in good working order was the answer for him.

I didn't buy my stuff right away. I took a month or two to digest all the information, and I asked forum members what they thought I needed. Finally I came up with something similar to what this article suggested with a few variations and began the journey.

Another thing I did was buy Lynn Abrams' video (http://straightrazorpalace.com/class...azor-dvd&cat=3), because it demonstrated these things being done. I kept watching until it didn't look like rocket science any more.

I downloaded and watched this free book from 1905 "Shaving Made Easy" http://www.archive.org/details/shavingmadeeasyw0020th and it reinforced the things I saw in the video.

Finally, I watched YouTube videos of people straight shaving to make sure I wanted to pursue this bad enough to make the financial commitment and work through the learning curve.

It has turned out to be a tremendously satisfying hobby and in a nutshell, those were the steps I took to get started. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. Don't be shy about asking questions, reporting your progress, and pursuing all the help you need to make this shaving venture a success! This entire forum was created with people like you in mind.
