Anybody used this? Does it make for a good lather? How does it smell?Attachment 140360
By most accounts the scent is love-it-or-leave-it. I must confess that I haven't tried the soap but I can't stand the scent - indeed the reason why I didn't buy it. C&E soaps have a good reputation for performance though. If possible I'd recommend going to a brick and mortar store where you can sample before buying.
I'm one of the ones who loves the smell of it..probably one of my favorite scents. The performance is kind of hit and miss for me, depends on the day but an overall good soap.
Gentlemen,
I have used most of these soaps through the years. Most of the fragrances I have liked, especially the sandalwood. The lather, however, has not impressed me. There are far better soaps for the money.
I use it, its the only soap I used so far.. so I can't compare. However I find it very easy to make a lather out of it. (I mention this because I read some treads that guys have trouble make a lather... so I wondered what its so difficult about making a good leather, as with this soap its very easy to make)
I really like the smell, but I find Arko or most creams (TOBS, T & H) easier to lather. Now I'm used to it I get good results, though.
You probably do want to find it in a bricks and mortar shop so that you can smell it, it's quite distinctive and I'm not surprised to read that it's a love-it-or-hate-it scent.
The C&E soaps are tallow based, triple milled, and are excellent. I did not like the Nomad scent, so I picked up and love the Sienna. The puck will seemingly last forever, and it produces a very good lather. These soaps are hard to beat for the money. Good luck.
Me too i love the smell of the nomad.
In quite like the scent but I do understand why some don't. It DOES actually remind me a little of those things you put in a urinal to stop the smell, but not as much as Arko which is almost EXACTLY that scent.
It lathers quite well but not spectacularly.
I like this soap.
The scent is spicy, exotic, a summer scent in my opinion. It is a perfect much to old spice white water.
The lather is rich and you can have a comfortable shave, but quite poor in hydration of the skin. I know that it is sensitive on water quality, so if you live in a area with "hard" water you may have difficulties.
It is a descent soap but not as good as tallow based soaps (Mitchell's, tabac, D.R. Harris etc).
Unfortunately, C&E is not using tallow any more.
The ingredients of the soap are:
potassium palmate, sodium palmate, potassium stearate, potassium palm kernelate, sodium palm kernelate, water (aqua), sodium stearate, glycerin, fragrance, palm kernel acid, (parfum), isopropyl myristate, tocopheryl acetate, bisabolol, sodium chloride, tetrasodium EDTA, tetrasodium etidronate, tetrasodium pentetate, bht, linalool, limonene, amyl cynnamal, coumarin, hydroxyisoexyl 3-cyclohexene, carboxyaldehyde, eugenol, titanium dioxide (CI 77492)
Sorry, I haven't tried it, but I think I might. I didn't know they made shave soap. Their lotion is top of the line, so the soap should be pretty good as well, (although maybe it's not!) The only thing left to do it try some. :)
I like the scent of Sienna better but that's just me. The new formula soap is a bit lacking in performance. It makes a nice looking lather but there's not much slickness to it. Unlike some soaps that leave some slickness behind after the blade passes over, there is nothing left behind with this soap. So it works for me as long as I don't try to revisit an area even right after I've hit it. My 2 cents is that I don't like the Nomad scent much and the performance is not as good as lots of similarly priced alternatives.
I'm rather new to shaving with anything else than a cartridge razor, I just started using a SR for just over a month... and I'm loving it.
I've been using brush and soap for a long time now and I remember using one of my father's creams until I came across this lovely soap.
I absolutely love the smell and as with many others, once you lather it the smell gets a little bit more subtle. I have to say that not knowing how to properly lather it, I always ended up with a watery running foam instead of a nice thick lather.
Lately I've been using a mug to create a lather and it has worked pretty well but I've noticed some things with this soap.
After reading and watching a lot of videos and posts I noticed the "upside down brush" to get the soap on the brush.
I also read that some soaps work better if you soak them with a little bit of warm water before lathering. This is not true with the C&E soaps as this introduces too much water into the mix.
So far, the best lathers I've got with this is:
1.- Soaking a boar bristle brush (I don't have any other brushes yet) let it absorb the water for a minute or two
2.- Put the brush upside down to let the excess water to drip freely and give it a little shake
3.- Use the upside down technique with the soap dry and finally lather it in a mug. (I use a coffee mug)
This method has given me some really nice lathers although is more foamy than creamy, or at least not as creamy as some of the reviews I've seen from Tabac or MWF. That being said, with just a few strokes from the brush on to the soap and lathering on the mug gives enough lather to do two or even three passes if you need.
I also noticed that instead of holding the brush upside down and holding the soap on top of the brush, holding it sideways and let the extra water to go down instead of back into the brush works best.
Here's my 2 cents to this topic, so I hope it helps.
Cheers.
E.
Like the scent of Nomad, but performance wise, the lather is gone after the first pass, no residue left that would facilitate razor glide.
I have used three Crabtree & Evelyn soaps.
One Siena and two Nomad.
First of all, Nomad scent cannot beat Siena according to my opinion.
Second, I found them acceptable but nothing exciting.
I have used the Sandalwood, Sienna & Lime soaps not Nomad, no reason usually bought Sandalwood.
All lather well, with a drop of glycerin lather great.
Nice fragrances, but you can get better lather from other soaps.
Its a nice soap i have the nomad and the sandalwood for some time now and its more like a midday to evening use in my opinion.
The smell is not very special but its soft and spicy with a little hint of woody in my opinion i find it a difficult smell to explain.
And like Eco82 i use a shaving mug aswell to get lather so far it work great for me but its not a very quick lathering soap.
The only complaint i have with this soap is the bowl it comes in, its a nice looking bowl but it make for a lot of spilling because the low edge to the soap.
But thats my opinion.
Agree with Harrygr that Nomad smells similar to Old Spice.
I use the cream, not the soap.
As good a lather/lubrication as anything out there.
Silverwolf
Load your brush and lather on you hand, face or bowl.
Your soap will last longer as well.
Thank you for the tip Euclid440 i'm using a muhle shaving mug now to make lather, but your right i forgot about making making lather on the face or hand.
i found the Nomad shaving soap being sold in the wooden bowl for $18 shipped online....is that a decent price?
not sure i can link the place its being sold...message me if you want it.
looks like one left.
I've got the cream and like others said it was a good lather but nothing to write home about. The closet smell I could compare it up would be "leather", with exotic spices as backup. I just got a sample of Spanish Leather and the two remind me of each other.
Homeless people and camels? Wow! They not only smell great, but they taste good too ;-)
I have C&E Sandalwood and Nomad. I like the scents, but the lather isn't all that. It dries too quickly, and it isn't very 'rich.' Good enough stuff I guess, but like Obie said, there's better stuff out there.
I' ve recently read that C&E is changing their marketing policy by increasing he price of their products. The soap with the wooden bowl will cost €33 in Athens, up from €22 that it was.
Jeez Harry, that is one heck of a price hike! I wonder if that's happening elsewhere too - anyone know?
i have the C&E in sienna and it doesn't lather at all. bubbly foam. all my other shaving creams and soaps lather flawlessly.
I bought some of this for my father in law last Christmas. Couldn't bear to watch him using the Gillette fatboy he's had since he started shaving with canned slime.
I've had a go on it too. We live in an area with water so hard it's painful but it lathered really well and personally I think it smells great. The only issue I found was that it dries on the face a lot quicker than some other soaps and creams I've used. That said a quick re-lather and you're off.
I've asked for either some of this or some Mitchell's wool fat for my birthday. See what the wife prefers.
This one is so controversial it would be best to go to one of C & E stores to smell it first. Personally, it seems too strong. Their sandalwood in the wooden bowl or cream in a tube/tub is great as is their almond scent. I think the almond scented soaps and creams are by a different maker than the nomad and sandalwood. Las Vegas has very hard water and all have worked well.
C&E will also give you a sample if the cream if you ask for it.
I'm not sure the almond is still made, it's not here in Canada at least. Just the four: Sienna, Nomad, West Indie Lime, and Sandlewood
driftwood: I did not know about the samples. Do they do this by mail do you have to go to the store? I am pretty sure they no longer have the almond scent but I suspect that was being made by another vendor than the others. Funny side note, when walking through their Las Vegas store a few years back I checked out their ample selection of accessories --very nice-- and found a beautiful large brush for about $25. I later realized the brush must have been priced wrong because it was an Edwin Jagger.
Yup I think you need to get to brick and mortar store.
That's awesome about the brush! I was looking at their brushes, but I already own 10 brushes so I don't really NEED another one (even though I have three on my Christmas list). The nomad is a nice winter scent, really it's a bit like Spanish Leather to my nose, very masculine.
Thats great Dave. C & E cremes really lather up nice.
drift, guilty. like you i had several brushes... the nicest being a silver tip badger from Germany and the most expensive one I ever bought from Trumper's in London. BTW, Trumper's cremes are available in a tub or at a much lower price, tubes about the size of toothpaste, and are IMHO one of the richest, most appealing scents and need only a small amount so they last. if all my soaps and cremes had to be from the same maker, this would be my choice. A few like C & E can match but not surpass them in quality but they have an excellent selection of choices. Jeez I just read my little recommendation...sorry it seems like a commercial. =)
I like commercials, I also like enablers!!!
