A great all around performer and inexpensive soap is MWF.
You know I think that is a very valid point and one newbies should take better notice of. If a newbie's lather is poor 9 out of 10 times it is not the soap's fault and buying uber expensive soaps won't make the problem go away. Same can be said of brushes, if you can't create a good lather with a $10.00 Omega boar brush paired with a $10.00 soap look at the guy in the mirror who is the problem. Sorry a little OT but related.

Not sure how easy it is to find in the US now, but the EU version of Palmolive is by far one of the best I have used.
I also just recieved a puck of St.Charles refined, great scent, great lather and decent price.
Hahaha...and if we're talking cheapies...how can the famous Col. Conk not get a mention...still use Col. Conk Amber....great stuff!
Mama Bear soaps are great and reasonably priced
+1 to MWF, Arko, Palmolive, and SRD soaps
If you're looking for the champ of soaps (and if cost isn't a factor) then I believe it to be MdC, hands down.
Now if we factor in creams and price, then I would have to say that one of my favourites is Speick…crazy lather and a pleasant scent on the cheap.
I have Arko as well and it is definitely a love it or leave it scent…I personally like it as it's just a real clean old timey scent and performs very well.
And of course, Tabac Cream ranks high on my list as well :)
SRD opus x is awesome too
