    Default Coate's Cream

You might have noticed the "Coate's is back" advertising on this site. I got interested and succumbed to the impulse buy (Hey it's $4)

The two tubes arrived yesterday and I tried both in a two pass this morning. Sandal Wood and Almond.

The Almond was a bit dry. It could be my bad mix, but it seemed a bit dry out of the tube (It's old stock being sold off as it's no longer made)

But the Sandalwood! The Sandalwood!! Wow, I've used Proraso for a while and have no complaints but this was like a Bently lather. It was a really rich lather, dense and creamy. It had excellent cushion and glide. It was like gently wiping away a soft velvet white cushion. The scent is pretty mild but warm.

Usually I wouldn't bother post about it but if anyone wants to try a cream if your in the States the postage is cheap (I ended up paying nearly $20 for two tubes to Australia) It's well worth it and a great travel size tube.

Has anyone else used Coates before? I'm wondering why they stopped making it!! Is there anything similar when my little tube finally gives its last brush worth of cushiony goodness :-( ?

Where exactly did you purchase this? I'm interested in the sandalwood. Thanks

    Coate's Superior Shaving Cream - Coate's

In the main SRP page on the left halfway down there is usually an ad for them too

The postage time wasn't overly quick to Aus, but you'll enjoy it when it does come! :-)

This is an old English Company that unfortunately ceased trading due I think to money distribution problems and poor management. I also believe that they have been resurrected by maybe one or two people from the original Company and started production once again but the quality of the product has diminished. I can't vouch for the later but I sent for 7 of these small tubes now being advertised on the SRP site after seeing a link on a shaving blog the source was the same and the guy seems really genuinely interested in bringing a fantastic shaving cream to a wider audience without ripping people off. He advised 7 as the best value for the postage costs. I think this was about 2 years ago and I'm still using them as they produce abundant lather for a great shave. Yet another fine product consigned to shaving history.

When I joined this hobby in 2007 there was an article in NYT about these cream http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/01/ny...ty/01stre.html

Then I found a couple of tubs, even the elusive rose which to me is the best rose scented shaving cream. I am generally a soap person, but Coate's is special to me, plus since my tubs are dehydrated I basically use them as soap

I found that Sandalwood and Almond's scent to be diminished but they still make a great lather. The Lime and Lavender seemed to have held up quite well. Their scent is still quite strong and pleasant. I snatched up a few tubes as well bringing my quantities of shaving soap/cream to a level that should supply the next two generations of shavers. Its a rich and protective lather. Nice stuff.

It's normal to leave some inheritance isn't it?

He must have a large stock to still be selling them this many years on! I'm tempted to buy up a stock myself so I still have great cream through the next great depression
