I sanitize all my newly acquired shave stuff (straights, DE, mugs etc) with Barbicide.
Was wondering if 'pre-owned' shave soaps/creams are safe?
Transmission of 'blood borne' illness comes to mind.
Ya re-lather and you have a nick, now the soap is contaminated?
Or does the soap de-activate bacteria/viruses??
I am not doctor but nothing lives in blood outside of the body longer than 7ish days.
Got his by googling: One claim against bar soaps is the bacteria factor. Because people sometimes share the same bar of soap, fears concerning the transfer of bacteria have emerged. However, studies have shown that although bacteria levels on previously-used bar soaps are slightly higher than on unused soaps, there have been no detectable levels of bacteria left on the skin's surface after using the soap [source: Heinze].
Personally I would never use used soap. You don't know the history of it plain and simple. I wouldn't use a used brush either.
Most soap simply isn't that expensive anyway. Why even do it?
Lots of selling of soap that has been used once or twice. I would not buy it unless new but some like the slight discount or that rare soap
Yah, better off to pass. Considering all the health downsides.
A used jar of MdC had popped up on the 'bay.... worth the extra 20 euros shipping not to have the worry.

I guess I'm lucky that I'm not in the hospital bed ridden. I can't begin to tell you how many used soaps I've purchased and sold over the years. I guess I should knock on wood as I've never had any issues.

In all the years I've covered (as a reporter) infectious disease, I've never heard of bugs being passed this way--at least, in the time in would take a shaving soap to travel from seller to buyer. I do recall a study that found that a bar of soap in a dental clinic did in fact transmit germs--but I don't remember if it actually caused disease. I suppose a wet tin of shaving soap could provide a moist little home.
There are so many things that are more likely to hurt us! Enjoy the soaps. Or, if it gives you peace of mind, leave them for me.
It may be perfectly safe however to me it's like going into a restaurant and the folks next to you leave half the meal and you go over and eat it. Just a yuck factor I guess. I know we do it all the time with our family but not strangers.
Personally I wouldn't offer used soap, not that I think there is anything wrong health wise but more as was previously mentioned, the "yuk" factor.
I've broken in new stinky shave brushes of assorted animal hairs that I eventually took pride in massaging my face with.
Who hasn't changed dirty diapers, or reached into a bowl of food (peanuts/candy/chips) that others had their hands in?
Same "Yuk" factor for me.
Maybe we could simply wash the soap with soap?
I sometimes get/swap used soap with family and friends, but never from people that I don't know.
Just something about buying an item that's used and related to personal hygene that you can't disinfect. No thanks, I'll pass.

Good question.
It seems to me that it would be safe, after all only the surface of the soap is dissolved in the water and then solidified back, so one could simply scrape off the surface, pretty similar to sanding or polishing or even washing a razor.
But probably not necessary anyways given that regular pathogens don't tend to thrive in such environment and the ones that survive would probably make their way on your skin in countless other ways already.
I guess the people who would consider it are past the 'yuck' factor already - we all have our own idiosyncrasies :)

interesting...how many of you have bar soap at home or wok, say like Lava pumice soap? We have it at work and I can't tell you how many people use it. Although I would hesitate to use a tub of shaving cream, UNLESS it was used in such a way that it was scooped out without a shave brush touching it. Now a used shaving brush, no thanks...unless I loved the handle, then it becomes a re-knot.
Hope you aren't too squimish Trimmy cause I can't tell you how many vintage brushes I have in rotation that I washed with soap before use and I haven't noticed any negative effects to my face.Quote:
