witch hazel

i'd like to buy some witch hazel and can find two types locally. first is Dickinson's witch hazel astringent:

second is simply "Distilled Witch Hazel" which i find the the pharmacy section

can anyone make a recommendation to which might be better to use?

What location are you?

I'm actually using the blue Dickinsons because that's all I can get from where I am, and I find it be be OK.

But the most favoured witch hazel seems to be Thayers which is available in several different styles.

I haven't tried the Thayer's but the Dickenson's is great.

The generic witchhazel you see at drug stores is mostly water and alcohol, its cheap stuff. The Dickinson has more witchazel in it. The thayers is the best, its very pure and contains other herbals depending on the type you get.

I'm in Canada. i can't get the blue dickinson's or thayers without ordering it online which i don't care for if i can at all avoid it.

that's surprising, i would have thought that the "distilled" generic stuff was more pure/concentrated than something listed as a "witch hazel formula"

so the popular opinion would be to get the dickinson stuff? doesn't bother me at all as it's the cheaper option

The dickinsons is simple but good -- some think it smells like crap --- The Thayers is more medicinal , complex, and scented.

i think you'd be safe with the Dickenson's. It's probably a little more $, but will last you a long time and I agree that the higher witchhazel content will give you a better result as a post-shave treatment.

I usually follow up a shave with alum, then Witchhazel, and sometimes Aftershave.

Edk442 You might want to check out your local nutritional stores for Thayers, or any of the drug stores in the hipper areas of ‘your town’ Canada. Just ask the local sock and sandals guy where he gets his vitamins. That's the place.

I'm no Witch Hazel expert, but I have read a few labels and if I recall correctly, the percentages of the ingredients have all been identical with the exception of those containing additional aromas, which of course, contained aromas. The amount of alcohol is generally 12-14% and the witch hazel is about 86%. I think the main difference in the plain WHs is packaging. Of course, I could be wrong, but I couldn't find any other difference.

PS. I like to put about 20% Masters Bay Rum and a nice squeeze of Pure Vegetable Glycerine in my WH bottle. Makes a great aftershave IMHO.

Well I picked up some Thayers Witch Hazel at the Nutrition House in a basic mall in Ottawa Ontario. I tried the Alcohol-Free rose petal toner with aloe vera.

Not bad stuff. I'm not scent guy but the rose petal smell fades fast enough but time will have to test my tolerance.

Scents are so personal. If it smells like that cute girl at the flower shop, or some good times with your significant other and a rose petals- your set, if it smells like aunt Ida... your pooched.

I have heard good things about rose water and rose oil so that can't hurt.
