Thread: Difference between sandalwood and patchouli

Was curious about the difference sandalwood and patchouli.

Each person will have there own opinion. For me it just boils down to smell. The sandalwood is ok but I really can't smell it that good. The patchouli how ever I can smell and it smell good to me. Other that smell the way the soap and or cream shaves will be the final decision maker. I am one of those that shave beforre the shower so really no matter what it smells like (pervided it doesn't smell like a skunk) makes no difference because it'll wash off.

I like either as a scent in shave soaps but there are variations in strength of the sent. I can stand a strong sandalwood scent but a strong patchouli scent reminds me of old 1960s hippies who seemed to over apply the stuff.

I like both, though a little Patchouli goes a long way.

Most of us have probably not ever spelled true Sandalwood scent. 2 oz. of quality Patchouli essential oil is under $15. (Essential oil comes from the plant or source as compared to fragrance oil which is made in a lab.)

2 oz of quality Sandalwood essential oil is about $300. Due to it's price, I'm guessing that true sandalwood scent isn't that common.

I’m sort of with Bob, patchouli smells like old hippies.
Sandalwood is from the same scent group and is much more pleasant of a smell to my nose. Although when it comes to wood scents I prefer cedar, cypress, vetiver and frankincense.

Thanks for the info. All three are so prominent in the majority of my soaps, it's nice to see a photo of the plants they come from.
