Back before (that's been said a lot in this thread, with the variant "back in the day") I wore a goatee, I used to just shave in the shower with my mach 3. Once I had to actually pay attention t the lines on my chin if I wanted to look good I switched to goop in a can.

Hmmm, an obsidian blade sounds like it would be very cool!

update.. i had a strictly water shave with my artist club right now.. i normally do one pass with some light touchup..

well with just water.. i missed tons and should do another pass.. i'm afraid without some cream i'll be in for some serious irritation.. i'm already hurting.. i slathered on some pure aloe vera gel.. and i'll wait till later today to shave proper.. the pure water idea was a bad one.. i don't recommend it...

Well isn't that how knapping is done is on a bar top?

Yeah, it makes for a bit of a "toothy" edge

[QUOTE=deighaingeal;621357]Have you thought that maybe his face would benefit from being tought the ways of a proper shave soap and brush. It would be less harsh on his face.

Yeah, I've offered him some but he's yet to take me up on it.

Shaving soaps or creams provide your face with lubrication and cushion. Water activates these properties. Shaving without a combination is an abortion on your face. Your FACE! You decide what is better.

Theres been a couple of days when I've been in a real rush in the mornings, and invariably forgotten to iron a shirt or something, and I've shaved with my DE and just warm water.

Its Ok I guess, certainly none of the glide and cushion a good lather provides, but it does get the hair off your face...!

Back in the early '90's when I had a graveshift security job, I used to keep a trackII in the cupholder of my car in case I jumped into the car and forgot to shave...I spent that twenty minute drive doing a dry shave...it was very painful, but always taught me to shave at home. Only happened a few times.

Before I started with the straight razor, I did what some of the other gents mentioned. Jump into the shower and shave under the hot shower water with no lubrication. And even then, the Mach 3 blade was over a month old because I didn't want to shell out more money for cartridges.

I used to shave in the shower with just hot water spraying on my face. It was okay and it saved me the effort of spreading the foam-in-a-can on my face and rinsing it off again at the sink. "Satisfactory" is about as positive as I could describe it.

Your friend may have very soft facial hair with very little in the way of skin oil, so that the water he applies softens his beard enough and lubricates his skin enough for a satisfactory shave.

Keep in mind that his definition of "satisfactory" may be v-e-r-y different.
    Namaste,
    Morty -_-
