Which is best? I am using soap and i was wondering if the cream is better. The soap is all right just wandered.:soapbox:
This question is just way too general to answer. Some soaps are better than some creams and vice versa. Also, a lot of opinions on these things are completely subjective.
Since you posed a general question, I will reply with my general answer:
SOAP.
If nothing else, you now have a reason to buy lots of both for comparison purposes.
I believe that is all personal preference.
There are fantastic soaps out there, and there sure are a lot of great creams as well.
My personal preference is cream.
Castle Forbes, Domenica Caraceni and Al's shaving cream to name a few. There are lots more:)
I too consider myself a shaving cream guy. I like D.Caraceni, Xpec, Castle Forbes, Truefitt and Hill to name a few. For Soaps, L'Occtaine is tops lately, but I also like Mithchlell's wool fat, Tabac, and Prairie Creations.
(Try L'Occtaine shave soap, it's off the hook)
Creams tends to be thicker, and provide more protection. Soaps are usually thinner, and you get more feedback from the blade. If you've only used soaps to this point, your missing out. Try some, it's addicting. I just picked up a new cream I'll review called,
"The Bluebeards Revenge" it has a cool skull and crossbones on the container..That alone tempted me to buy it.
I guess I should do some kind of sticky on the subject...?
Might just a well ask Ginger or Maryann? Ford or Chevy? Dunhill or Kaywoodie? Burley or Virginia? It really is all about personal preference. Part of the fun of the hobby early on is stalking (researching) soaps and creams and pulling the trigger on different stuff you'd like to try. Some of it will be fantastic and stay with you forever and some will be in the "that was fun, what do we do next?" category.
I myself would answer Maryann, Ford, Kaywoodie, Burley and Soap, however even though I'm a soap guy, I do occassionally dabble in creams. The two creams currently in my rotation (C.O. Bigelow and TOBS Eton College) are quite good.
The key with either is to buy quality, in my opinion. Really good creams and excellent soaps do not offer that much of a difference in terms of the quality of the shave relative to each other.
For the record, I prefer the experience of a good soap (Vintage Yardley, old formula Penhaligons, Czech & Speake Oxford and Cambridge, etc.)
Ginger and Maryann if you please :D
Why settle for one when you can have both .... add a little Glycerin and
Uberlather Baby !!!!!!
You can't go wrong with either!
hrmmm.. ginger, maryann, and glycerin.. good call.
thanks for all your help. I will buy some cream and try it too see which one suits my fancy i guess. Don't sound like there is one great one. And that makes since. I am new to this so hang in there with me. I will most likely ask the same questions that all newbies do. I will go back and read some, that way i won't have to ask so much. thanks again.
There isn't one great one; there are many great ones. Start with Castle Forbes or Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet, or St. James and you will be fine :D
Many a Gretzky fan may differ. :rofl2:
sorry, had to.
But I'd put Al's Bomb's up there for creams too. Good pricing and Afterbalms that match scents also.
Use both. A good cream and a good soap are virtually identical. If you only use one, you are missing out.
I just realized there are no stickies in the Soaps and Creams section...
I would recommend that we post a sticky on this subject, as this topic seems to come up very often here. It is a very cut and dried, YMMV scenario.
To the OP, please take no offense as none was intended and I realize you are just starting out.
This is a common newb theme, perhaps the sticky should be posted in the Beginners Section as well.
