This question is just way too general to answer. Some soaps are better than some creams and vice versa. Also, a lot of opinions on these things are completely subjective.
Since you posed a general question, I will reply with my general answer:
SOAP.

If nothing else, you now have a reason to buy lots of both for comparison purposes.

I believe that is all personal preference.
There are fantastic soaps out there, and there sure are a lot of great creams as well.
My personal preference is cream.
Castle Forbes, Domenica Caraceni and Al's shaving cream to name a few. There are lots moreBjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

I too consider myself a shaving cream guy. I like D.Caraceni, Xpec, Castle Forbes, Truefitt and Hill to name a few. For Soaps, L'Occtaine is tops lately, but I also like Mithchlell's wool fat, Tabac, and Prairie Creations.
(Try L'Occtaine shave soap, it's off the hook)
Creams tends to be thicker, and provide more protection. Soaps are usually thinner, and you get more feedback from the blade. If you've only used soaps to this point, your missing out. Try some, it's addicting. I just picked up a new cream I'll review called,
"The Bluebeards Revenge" it has a cool skull and crossbones on the container..That alone tempted me to buy it.
I guess I should do some kind of sticky on the subject...?We have assumed control !

Thanked: 1185Might just a well ask Ginger or Maryann? Ford or Chevy? Dunhill or Kaywoodie? Burley or Virginia? It really is all about personal preference. Part of the fun of the hobby early on is stalking (researching) soaps and creams and pulling the trigger on different stuff you'd like to try. Some of it will be fantastic and stay with you forever and some will be in the "that was fun, what do we do next?" category.
I myself would answer Maryann, Ford, Kaywoodie, Burley and Soap, however even though I'm a soap guy, I do occassionally dabble in creams. The two creams currently in my rotation (C.O. Bigelow and TOBS Eton College) are quite good. The older I get, the better I was

The key with either is to buy quality, in my opinion. Really good creams and excellent soaps do not offer that much of a difference in terms of the quality of the shave relative to each other.
For the record, I prefer the experience of a good soap (Vintage Yardley, old formula Penhaligons, Czech & Speake Oxford and Cambridge, etc.)
