Can't say I have tried enough shaving creams to have a top 10 but my fav at the moment is the eshave lime. Makes a great lather and smells awesome as well.
Top 10 may be a little excessive, but off the top of my head I could give you the top 5:
1. Domenico Caracenei
2. Castle Forbes
3. Xpec (yes, I know it is classified as a soap, but it really is a cream)
4. DR Harris
5. Gentlemen's Refinery
kalerolf,
Such choices are very personal. The below are some I have that I have used and really liked :)
Castle Forbes Cedarwood & Castle Forbes Lime
Musgo Real
TOBS Avocado & TOBS Rose
Whilst not a cream, but a soft soap, the best lather product for me has been Cella Crema da Barba/Cella Crema Sapone Extra Extra Purissima; stunningly good stuff :)
Hope you find your 'nirvana' cream :)
Have fun !
Best regards
Russ
Here's a few that come to my mind (in no particular order):
1. Al Raz' Da Bomb (FANTASTIC)
2. Acca Kappa 1869 (New Creme in tub, not the one in the tube)
3. Acqua Di Parma
4. Cyril Salter
5. Castle Forbes
6. Black Jack Triple Cushion
7. eShave
8. Godrej (not bad either)
Well I can tell you I like SRD's Lime and West indies Bay shave soap. And I can also tell you that I just tried some Mitchells wool fat soap and that just put me in a gorgeous frame of mind. That stuff is awesome !!:D
Domenico Caraceni
Xpec
Castle Forbes
Truefitt and Hill
The Bluebeards Revenge - New
TOBS Avacado (I love the fragrance)
+1 Phatman. Soap and Creams can be very personal.
Smell, or Fragrance is a personal thing as well, What appeals to me, may not to you, and vice versa. For lather, I think anyone who's used it wouldn't argue that Caraceni is tops, followed by Xpec, and believe it or not, The Bluebeards Revenge. These creams lather very quickly, with very little effort and provide rich, thick, luxurious lather. Great glide, great protection, and all have very unique fragrances, not your run of the mill EO's and FO's. The new one, "The Bluebeards Revenge" is paraben free and affordable. I have yet to find an Artisan offering that even comes close to Caraceni, Bluebeards or Xpec for that matter. Price is a completely different subject. These are expensive shave creams, make no mistake. If your looking to save money, I'd go with the Artisan creams, TOB or AOS....
I've tried Proraso, it's great but, I don't like Menthol. Nancy Boy is good too, again. I'm not crazy about the fragrance. Tabac makes a cream which is good. Musgo Real, A nice fresh lanolin smell, goes great when mixed with MWF.
All I listed are a "must have" for me. Truefitt and Hill would be the 1805 fragrance. All of the Castle Forbes, and the rest are unique, or listed....
Enjoy....
That's a hard question. Since no one has tried every soap and cream out there you will get a list of everyone's favorites and since some are more popular than others you'll see those names pop up again and again.
You just need to experiment. For me:
Castle Forbes
Trumpers
Harris
Fitjar
You cant go wrong with Penhaligons IMO. It aint cheap but my god its good! :) Incredible scents, superlative lather and great glide and cushion.
I highly recommend the Endymion, thats probably my favourite out of all my soaps and creams.
Thanks to everyone for their reply.
I see that almost everyone Castle Forbes has listed in his list, Is this as good as they say or whether the price is acceptable.
I can not make a choice, Also I hear good things about Saint Charles, Al shaving cream, Proraso, ect.
Nobody uses one of these creams?
hello all,
I just tried Lucky Tiger the other day and it was really grand.
I have a limited shaving experience and a limited cream experience but everything about Lucky Tiger was just awsome.
Stultsy
What I have been finding is that the creams or soaps with some tallow or lanolin (Tabac, Musgo Real, Mitchells Wool Fat etc.) seem to provide the cushion, glide and moisturing that are a key component of an enjoyable shave for me. I really like Penhaligons, Castle Forbes etc, but find myself wishing they had some fat. So I picked up a bottle of lanolin and I add a few drops along with a brush load of Mitchell's Wool Fat Soap to them and get everything I am looking for.
I will say that I actually was not crazy about Castle Forbes. It is a very good cream, and the lavender scent was the best I have tried, but for the price, there were others that I found performed equal or better. If I had to make a top 10, it would be up there, but it would not be #1.
I'll throw a vote for Fitjar cream which in my opinion is the best I have tried. It is expensive also, but the scents are extremely unique and the performance is top notch. If you don't believe me, try the Telemark. :boohoo:
Oh, and I also love Musgo!
Gentlemen:
My top 10 shave creams, in no particular order, are the following:
1. Castle Forbes lavender
2. Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet
3. Trumper's Rose
4. Truefitt & Hill
5. Institute Karite
6. Coates
7. Lavanda
8. Harris lavender
9. St. James of London
10.The Bluebeard's Revenge
I have yet to try Caraceni. When I do, I might add it to the list, or not. If I do, my list will be 11, but then too much of a good thing is fine with me.
Regards,
Obie
Hey Obie...I tried a sample of goodfellas courtesy of My buddy Vic and saw that you were an endorser.Good stuff.:)
Top ten? Very subjective and there are alot of good ones out there to play with.
Pabster
1. Kiehl's Lite Flite
2. Floris Santal
3. Trumper's Coconut
4. JM Fraser's Original
Top shaving cream for me would be:
1. Cella, Crema Sapone Extra Extra Purissima
2. P.160 Sapone Tipo Morbido
3. Santa Maria Novella
4. Acqua Di Parma
5. Valobra Crema Sapone Purissima
I have left off Martin de Candre and D.R. Harris Arlington as those two are hard soaps but two of the best hard soaps in the world.
Here you go Al's Shaving Products
Thanks so much! :)
I'm a complete rookie when it comes to this but I'm using the same stuff I used when shaving with a Quatro (probably a swear word on this forum). I used Body Shop Maca Root Shave Cream. It works for me but I'm now inclined to try some of the others mentioned in this thread.
I am new to the forum and 1 month into wet shaving I started with some cheap soap set that came with a brush but I have recently picked up castle Forbes lime essential oil shaving cream and it is truly incredible
Oh man I used to love threads like these! I am a bit of a cream whore myself! But alas I have discovered something kind of weird. I love Italian creams in the cold - German in the fall and spring - and North American in the summer lol! Weird eh!
Ok that's a bit open ended and not entirely true but I guess that's to say that depending on my mood and the season, I like some creams more than others!
And for the record, I for one am not that impressed with Castle Forbes lime... yeah I said it lol!!
Best of luck!
I would have to say :
Castle Forbes
Poroso
Wool fat
MarkInLondon,
I get it from Mr Mayhew at Connaught Shaving :
Cella
Have fun !
Best regards
Russ
The only creams I have reordered..
Cella
Tebac
MWF
Proraso
Has anyone tried Burt's Bees shave cream? I picked up their aftershave lotion and liked it, when I first started lathering with VDH and Williams. I've been enjoying the puck soaps too much to make the leap back to creams...
I have tried a good handful of shaving creams, and they are all good for different reasons; however, the best all around performer was Nancy Boy Signature Shaving Cream. I picked up a tub from their San Fransicso store, you can order it from them online. Hard to explain with words, but it is top notch stuff. Best glide and cushion I have experienced, and I love the scent. I also use two differnent scented AOS creams, which are also top notch and the scents are amazing, Truefitt & Hill, which is good, C.O. Bigelow cream, which is actually Proraso, and is also very good, Spencer & Devon Sagebrush, which is great both in performance and scent. Good luck!
I really like the razor rock croaps: xxx, fresco, mentolipto, and cheech ob & jasmin. They are lightly fragranced, make lots of lather, and slick! Erasmic from westcoastshaving.com, pre de provence, speik, olimon (one of my favorite scents)
Generally I'm predominantly a soap guy so my experience with creams is pretty limited. That said, with regard to creams I'd definitely give the nod to TOBS Eton College, great smell, nice lather, reasonable price and a tub will last forever.
Today my wife and i where shopping, then we see the new bodyshop in town.
A quicklook i and buy a tube macra root (dont now this the right name) smell is good and the test lather suprised me.
Handy in the travelbox ;)
I'd love to go shopping in Amsterdam.
Some here that come up frequently -- some not so much. For me:
Castle Forbes
Cella (OK...not really a cream)
Proraso Red
Geo F Trumper coconut
Based on performance my favorite creams are:
Proraso (green tube)
Art of shaving (Lemon)
Musgo Real
