In my brief time, I've tried a New York shaving cream, nice but pricey, Shart Shave, nice but pricey and VDH soap, nice but cheap. Weren't very comfortable shaving but I figured my technique would improve. Then I tried heating some glycerin soap from a craft store in a double boiler, adding some benntonite clay and EO's. End result was a soap that works well for me, slick and moisturizing. Aha, that's what it's supposed to feel like! Taking it one step further, I add a drop of liquid glycerin and a dab of the fancy shave cream to my cup. Whip up some homemade, transfer to the cup, mixt it all up and a slick, smooth uberlather.
Try it, it completes the golden triangle, good, cheap, fast.
