Cella Storage

So, a few months ago, my brother-in-law and I split a kilo of the white stuff...Cella.

I love Cella, but it is in rotation with several other soaps, and it's taking me a while to get through my supply. I am storing it in these:

In total, I fit my supply into three of these containers but am barely past 1/2 done with the first one. The other day, I checked on one of the unused bowls, and the surface of the soap seemed a little drier than what I remember the texture of the soap being the day it first arrived. Is this a bad thing or to be expected? Does anyone else have experience storing Cella long-term?

I keep the bit that's in use in a ceramic pot in the bathroom, the remainder I keep, wrapped in cling film, inside a zip lock food bag, in the fridge.

Been about 18 months so far and it's keeping very well.

vaporize some water over it, for a couple of days, and keep it closed. Once the cracks disappears, put some transparent film over the bowl before putting on the cover. That should be enough to keep you cella in good shape. ;)

P.S. Store it in a fresh place, avoid warm rooms for long term storage.

I keep about 700gr of Cella in the refrigeration for the last 9 months and it is in good condition at the moment. However, since the storage must last for some years, the next time I will buy the 1Kgr box, I will separate it in 4 parts of 250gr each, and I will store them in the freezer.

I'll have to give these a try. Out of curiosity, what does refrigerating it do? I hadn't thought of that for shaving soap before.

It keeps it Cool!........... seriously though the temperature in Qatar reaches 50 C during the summer months and stuff tends to spoil/melt/seperate, or all three.

I don't think the dryness of the refer is good for the soap unless you live on a desert. Even then I don't think the refer is what keeps it fresh. I would certainly wrap it well in plastic wrap, seal them in your containers.

I have -/+ 500g of Cella in the original box inside a quality ziplock in my refrigerator for over a year and it still looks and smells great. As long as it doesn't start to darken or look pasty you should be good.

I split mine into 100 gram dollops in similar containers to you; they get wrapped in aluminium foil and go into the freezer. There they remain until one is removed for use.

No need to keep soaps in the freezer. Soap does not like warm temperatures as there a percentage of fat that is not processed during the soap-making process, but the only bad thing that can happen is the ossidation of the fat; that would make it rancid. As long as you keep the soap in a cool and dry place and protected from excessive air, it should last almost forever. ;)

cella, don't know why but i can't stand that soap. I honestly think its the only shave soap I have ever tried that I wouldnt use again! I feel like an outcast lol

Maybe you tried a rancid one sleekandsmooth, as this is a soap that almost everybody likes.

I think what most people do not understand is that Cella is an old world shaving soap.
(one of the best IMO).
Most start out with expensive aromatic soaps which is fine but they work no better than cella.Cella is a cheap workingmans shave soap.
Wrap it in wax paper like cheese (the wax paper inhibits oxidation)Put it in a ziplock,store it like you would wine,in a dark cool place,it will last for yrs.

I would say It's probably one of the finest performing shaving soaps money can buy, I also love Vito's super Coconut, but you won't be able to tell these two soaps apart almost identical in performance and scent, If I only could buy two soaps I would happily choose these two.

I recently got a tub of it to try out and I have to say that I really like it. I love the scent. I think it smells and performs like the TOBS almond that I have. Very nice soap.

I will agree with this but if I had to choose one I would take Vito's over cella.

But for storing both I do like pixelfixed. If you don't have wax paper on hand cling wrap will work also.

Actually wax paper is the same as french cheese paper and tottally inhibits mold growth on cheese for an extended time.
To me cella is no diff than a brick of monteray Jack (except for the taste of course:)

So, when you say "cool" I'm assuming you mean room temperature and not refrigerated temperature. I've been keeping my containers in my bathroom cabinet, which is cool, relatively dry, and, of course, dark. I don't see SWMBO being down with soap in the fridge. I've already overrun it with beer :)

I'm about to cling wrap my spares and then seal that with the lid.

Incidentally I shaved with Cella today. Man, that stuff is amazing. Love the smell. For a face latherer, the stuff just explodes off the brush with just a little water.

Ok, is there a shortage of Cella I don't know about? I keep about 6-8 soaps/creams on hand and I make sure to order when notice Im getting low. Please educate me if there is something I should know.

No shortage just a lot of us buy it in the 1kg bricks so we have to store it.

I like to try new soaps and creams to much to commit like that. ;-)

Yep, exactly. There is no need to keep a soap in the fridge, not even a "soft" one as cella. Keep it in a fresh, ideally below 72F, protect it from direct sunlight and with reduced air contact and it'll be fine. Consider that the 1Kg brick of Cella is wrapped in nylon and put in a carton box, no other protection is required and, if you store it correctly (fresh temperature, dark and dry) it can last for years. Soaps don't really go bad, it's just the fat part that is not converted into soap that might go rancid but, again, if properly stored it's a very remote possibility. On top of that, if the soap is properly stored and after some year it smells like rancid, it's likely to be just the very thin layer that has direct contact with the air that smells bad; if you remove it the rest of the soap is normally good. Again, all of this is true if you store the soap correctly ;)

I received a big block of Cella today. Love the scent, I will use it tonight for my shave. I read all the posts & cut it into several large blocks, wax wrapped it, zip locked it & put it in the fridge.


........Oh,,, if someday you see Hirlau doing the perp walk on T.V. , don't think bad of me,,,it was the Cella they found. :shrug:

This is the soap,I buy in Kilos and push in grams! I have several regular users now. I just wish I own stock on the soap! Double O

Sounds like you need a distributor. :D

I guess my question is who is our Canadian Supplier for these products?

I don't know who to suggest, because a lot of the vendors are close in the price for the 1 kg. I got free shipping because I ordered a few other things. Shipping , I guess would be the decider.

In Canada, both italianbarber.com and fendrihan.com sell the 1kg block as well as the 150g tub. There are probably other shops selling it, but these are the ones I know about.
