Disc brakes have been pretty much standard on higher end mountain bikes for a decade or so. Now I hear that they are starting to put them on road bikes as well. They are way better than V-brakes, side pulls, or centerpulls in wet weather. In the dry I don't think it makes that much difference, but in wet it definitely does.
I prefer mechanical discs to 'juicy' (hydraulic) brakes because they are easier to work on, and to switch from one bike to another should you take a notion to do that. IME.
