Is black film on the spine normal?

I have a 5/8 Ralf Aust and the SRD 2" Latigo strop that I've been using for a couple months now. I'm noticing after I strop that there is just a hint of black film on the spine after I'm done that wipes off with a tissue. I think the razor is taking off tiny bits of leather as I strop and it's being deposited on the spine. Is that normal? Is it an indication that my stropping technique needs some help?

I'm wondering if it isn't some color/dye coming off the strop ? Is the surface of the strop still smooth, or is it showing some wear/roughness ? As far as technique, you don't need to use a lot of pressure on the spine. Just enough to keep it down on the strop. Assuming you are doing that, not nicking your strop or rolling your edge (by lifting the spine) your technique is probably fine. Truthfully we'd have to see you strop to know for sure but the above is my assumption.

Because of the oil and way layer on Latigo strops, they are known for leeching as this layer wears off in use initially with a new stop. The dye and the leeching can easily be wiped off and brushed off. After you get past this layer, the strop normally develops a heavy draw. Some have used small amounts of neats foot oil to help hasten the process. Rubbing the palm of your hand over the strop until your palm feels warm will also hasten the process and break the strop in nicely.
