Does diamond spray work best on pressed wool felt ?
The "spray" IME does work best on the Felt... :)
Cool, Thanks !!
Thats what I used for a while and it worked great for me (0.5 diamond on felt)! After my honing improved I find that I don't use it as much. I still keep it around though.
That's exactly what I bought 0.25 and a 100% hard pressed felt ! I also bought a Naniwa 12,000 for refreshing ! I think I'll be ok for a while with just those for a while !
That's the exact thing is about to purchase!! Except I'm thinking 0.5. Can someone please educate me on the differences between all the sprays? Diamond vs CrOx? 1.0, 0.5, 0.25? And their different purposes? This kind of ties into my post in the Strop section. Perhaps a mod can merge the posts if appropriate?
Your face… number of laps... and condition of the edge.
With Diamond you really have to experiment to see what works best for your face and how many laps give you the results you want for the edge you are trying to improve.
Less is more.
Personally I prefer Chrome Oxide and or .50 CBN for maintence and comfort over Diamond.
I've heard that diamond spray leaves a harsher scratch pattern, and this I can believe since diamonds are harsh abrasives. Also the 0.25 and 0.5 micron is just a difference in abrasive size. 0.5 seems to be the standard but some people love 0.25 while others hate it. Just depends on you I suppose. The CrOx leaves a smoother feeling edge due to the size/shape of abrasives in the paste. I've not used CrOx or CBN so I can't compare the two, I'm going based off of what I've experienced with diamond and reading how other people like CrOx.
Diamond does leave a deeper stria, cuts faster and can feel harsh on the skin as the deep stria creates a micro saw tooth edge.
Chrome Oxide and CBN of the same grit size leave a shallower stria and less of a saw tooth / straighter edge, more comfortable on the skin.
So it depends on what you are trying to achieve with your edge. I have used diamond to refresh an edge followed by Chrome Oxide for comfort and CBN for maintenance.
Really at that level it depends on your face and the razor’s edge.
I use the .5 micron diamond spray on pressed felt for refreshing the edge every so often. I have found that a good strop is necessary (25 laps on linen and 50 on leather) afterwards or, like others have said, the shave feels very harsh - close, but not a smooth stroke.
