Thread: New Modular Paddle Wearing At Sides

I'm a new guy just got my stuff a day ago. I started to strop on the smooth leather side of the modular paddle that lynn makes. Even light strokes. I noticed that the sides of the leather modular panel are wearing about a 1/8 inch in from side.

Also, when I first got it, it was smooth and the blade on the edge had no "air" of space under it but I notice in the middle as I slowly move blade along it doesn't quite touch the edge quite completely. It does as I move further up.

Is all this normal with use?

No, if you put your blade in the stropping like position on a flat surface, like a kitchen counter GENTLY, can you see light between the blade and counter?

The answer Lynn just posted is what I was trying to get at, before there was a picture, Pielfixed. I thought maybe a warp or a frown could be spotted by the OP on a flat surface.

Keep the shoulder off the strop. Don't know why your getting it on both sides unless you are flipping the piece.

Is it the same (ie gap under blade in same place when you have the gold-etch facing the leather) with the razor the other way around? How about the hone wear on each side? Sure the blade is not warped?

I've nicked mine and replaced the smooth leather pad when I was a beginner but marking up the lenght of the pad suggests that the blade has a deformity (chip or warp) that travels up the pad as you strop and marks the leather. I'm pretty near you and I have an extra new premium leather pad but I would not try it until you are sure about that razor.

The NY/CT/NJ area is blessed by a great group of guys that meet pretty frequently. I'm not sure when the next one will take place but I suggest you look out for it and join us. There are real experts who will help you one on one with stropping, honing and maintaing your razor(s).

I bought the paddle strop from Lynn and this is my second pad. its wearing on the sides and I just got a new pad today and it will NOT sit flush on the last leather pad or this one. theres a gap in the middle as i run the blade along the pad. Even using x stroke gives minimal coverage.
