FWIW, when I was a kid the barber shop I went to had three barbers... all shaved men with str8s... all stropped the razors on their hanging strops (attached to the barber chair) with about the same technique and speed that's being used in the video clip. It made a slap, slap, slap, ... slap sound as they stropped. Each chair had two or three hanging strops, all attached to the same spot. Each strop had a leather and a linen. I don't remember them ever using a barbers hone.![]()

It is a bit hard to see, but depending on how he hits the loom (with the spine first) and how he lifts the blade off the loom at the end (lift the edge before lifting the spine) this might very well work.
Of course if it is the other way around ...![]()
There has to be something to it or else they would not be able to use the razor at all.

Thats how the barber who helped me learn used his hanging strops.
It seems to me he was even faster on his barber hones.

That is just how a barber had shown me back in 1999. I personally am more quiet with my stropping.
His edge testing, verbal knowledge and other suggestions indicated that he was very versted in the subject and had done it that way since the 1950s. MikeB
